Marie Osmond defends not giving kids inheritance: "It breeds laziness and entitlement"

Marie Osmond has defended her decision not to leave her fortune to any of her children, as she slammed the idea of inheritance money.

The 63-year-old singer, who has eight kids, said she believes people won't achieve anything "if they're just handed money" and said value comes from being pushed to work hard.

Marie also claimed that an inheritance "breeds laziness and entitlement", before sharing what she plans to do with all of her money.

"Honestly, why would you enable your child to not try to be something? I don’t know anybody who becomes anything if they're just handed money," she said in a new interview.

Marie added the "greatest gift" a parent can give their child is "a passion to search out who they are inside and to work".

She went on to discuss her "one rule" for her children which she believes improves their work ethic.

"If you start it, you finish it, you don’t ever have to do it again, but you gotta finish," Marie told US Weekly.

She added: "I just think all [an inheritance] does is breed laziness and entitlement. I worked hard and I’m gonna spend it all and have fun with my husband."

As well as spending money with her husband, Marie also plans to leave a lot of her fortune "to help people" and said she will financially assist her children when they need it, such as if they want to buy a car.

This isn't the first time the star has discussed her inheritance plans.

During an episode of The Talk back in 2020, she said she wants her kids to work for something they really want.

"I think you do a great disservice to your children to just hand them a fortune because you take away the one most important gift you can give your children, and that’s the ability to work.

"Let them be proud of what they make, and I’m going to give mine to my charity," she said.

Marie is married to Stephen Craig after the pair tied the knot for a second time in 2011, following their divorce in 1985.

The couple share 39-year-old son Stephen.

Marie also shares six children with her ex-husband Brian Blosil - Jessica, 35, Rachael, 31, Brandon, 26, Brianna, 24, Matthew, 23, and Abigail, 18.

The former couple's eldest son, Michael, died by suicide in 2010 at the age of 18.
