Margot Robbie took a break from her new baby pink Barbie movie press tour persona to attend the Met Gala yesterday evening, wearing archival Chanel from 30 years ago.
The black gown, which was designed by Karl Lagerfeld and worn on the runway by supermodel Cindy Crawford back in 1993, was remade for Robbie especially for the event.
It featured a sheer, asymmetric sash, knotted at the bust just beneath a sweetheart neckline and above the see-through corset midriff, with its signature Chanel chain woven straps forming the corset’s boning.
“I'm wearing Chanel, this dress was worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993,” she told La La Anthony, who was interviewing for Vogue on the red carpet. “They remade it for me and it's obviously a Karl design. I feel really great in it, actually.”

Robbie accessorised the piece sparingly — neutral makeup, blown-out hair, gold drop earrings and a few rings — but she’s never been one for drastic red-carpet drama, really.
Her last Met Gala appearance was in 2016, where she wore a simple white cut-out gown by Calvin Klein. This was accessorised by only some chunky gold cuffs and an oblong black clutch that looked more like a big pebble.
Robbie also has a longstanding relationship with Chanel. Despite rumours that their partnership had ended last year, the star has continued to serve Chanel looks. It was therefore all but guaranteed she’d be sporting the brand at the Met.
Margot addressed the partnership with Chanel in her red-carpet interview, saying: “I had the great privilege of getting to know Karl to an extent," she said. "I was the last Chanel ambassador that he picked, actually. It is an honour. I'm thrilled that they're honouring him tonight because he was exceptional.”
While her heart may lie with Chanel, Robbie recently turned heads when she donned a pink Prada two-piece for her CinemaCon appearance alongside Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling (who also wore pink) and writer-director Greta Gerwig.
She has also previously garnered attention for wearing Bottega Veneta street-style looks and Alaïa gowns on the red carpet (fuelling the Chanel breakup rumours) but the star and brand proved last night that they’re closer than ever. Can we expect a Chanel pink boucle moment for the Barbie premiere? Time will tell.
