Marcus Rashford makes new Man Utd aim clear with World Cup "disappointment" already behind him

Marcus Rashford scored a stunning solo goal and revealed he has already put his World Cup disappointment behind him.

Rashford ran from inside his own half before scoring to book United's quarter-final place, after Christian Eriksen had given Erik ten Hag 's side a first-half lead. Striker Rashford admitted England's World Cup quarter-final exit to France was hard to take, but said getting back in a United shirt and scoring was the best way to deal with it.

"It was good to come back,” said Rashford. “It was a tough game and good to get a win to take into the next one. It's more emotions-wise, because it was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out and you have to pick yourselves up.

"There's no time to feel sorry for yourself. You need to pick up results and thankfully we did that today. It was fun to be out there.”

United took a step closer to winning a first trophy since the Europa League in 2017 and Rashford said: “We're in every tournament to try and win it. This is definitely a good one to win.

“Winning this trophy early in the season in February can push you on to achieve more in the season."

United boss Ten Hag hailed Rashford's display and said: “I think he's on a very good level, his performances are improving a lot from game to game.

“He scored a great goal, a great dribble and a great finish. He's in great form and I hope he can keep his focus and performance. I think he was a threat for the defending line of Burnley.

"He moved so often behind the defending line and they are the most difficult situations to get the ball there. But with the passing capabilities of players like Eriksen, Casemiro and Bruno, we have the players that can get the ball there.

"[You have to] keep going and keep believing that the ball is going to get there, but it is an investment. [It] costs a lot of energy and costs a lot of power and today he got the benefit from it. It was a dribble and a great goal."

The United boss was happy his side had returned to action in winning ways and will now await the quarter-final draw. And the Dutchman hinted more rotation will come as the games begin to come thick and fast.

"I think they were good on the ball. It's a difficult to get the press on but I think we did. We had a lot of high regains, we had a lot of transitional moments," Ten Hag added.

"I think we need to take a little bit [from] that. There is definitely room for improvement, we have to work on that, but of course I am pleased with a win. I think after a break it's always difficult to find the rhythm but I think we did quite well.

"Also, some different players came on and I think they played quite well. I had a routine [and it wasn't] 100 per cent, but you see that the principles are there and I am quite happy with the game we played."

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was pleased with his side's performance. He said: "We didn't roll over, we were aggressive, we created some chances. We look forward to our next game against Birmingham and that's our priority now."
