Marcus Rashford drops awkward social media gaffe with parting message to David de Gea

Marcus Rashford has dropped a social media clanger as he attempted to post a farewell message to David de Gea.

The Manchester United forward has seen one of his long-term team-mates leave Old Trafford after his contract expired following weeks of talks. The goalkeeper was offered a pay cut to remain in the north west before the club later withdrew the contract and tabled another fresh proposal.

Eventually De Gea opted to leave the club he signed for 2011 with several of his team-mates sad to see him go. Rashford though has made a blunder after he appeared to send a message to someone who manages his account, who has then copied it word for word.

As a result Rashford's account posted a picture of himself and De Gea alongside the words: "Caption ideas: You were here from my breakthrough, good luck with your next step brother".

Very rarely do players manage their own social media accounts, many of whom have teams who help them with various posts. That has led to issues in the past and it appears as though Rashford has joined the unwanted list, although he has since edited the post and taken out the "caption ideas" element.

Gary Neville was among those to call for players to manage their own accounts after Phil Foden's account called out Kylian Mbappe - before it was swiftly deleted following backlash. The pundit said: "I mentioned on here a few weeks ago about players having their accounts run by social media companies.

"Lads run your own accounts! Your independent thought and authenticity is at stake . It’s your voice , not anyone else’s."

United are on the lookout for a new No.1 after De Gea's exit. His departure is by no means a shock and a replacement has been lined up in Inter Milan's Andre Onana, who worked with Erik ten Hag when they were both at Ajax.

De Gea, who won the club's Player of the Year award more than anyone, said on social media: "I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club.

"I took incredible pride everytime I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers.

" It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together. Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me."
