Marcus Rashford breaks silence after Man Utd humiliation at Liverpool

Marcus Rashford has issued a defiant response following Manchester United's humiliating 7-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The 25-year-old, like the rest of his United teammates, struggled to make an impact at Anfield despite missing two excellent chances to score. He came close in the first-half but his effort was saved by Alisson, before then hitting the post in the second after going around the goalkeeper.

Rashford was made to pay for not taking his chances as Liverpool ran riot to record their biggest-ever win over United. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored a brace, while Roberto Firmino also found the net for the Reds on a historic day on Merseyside.

As for United, it was their heaviest-ever Premier League defeat as they squandered the chance to close the gap on Arsenal and Manchester City. On Monday afternoon, talisman Rashford took to Twitter to explain his side's defeat as he also admitted they must "stick together".

Rashford tweeted: "I wish we could play a game today to try and put things right. The result is the result, and we can’t see past that! We must not let it define our season. We have to trust the process and stick together."

The England ace had been in sensational form prior to the clash against Liverpool, having struck five times in his previous four league matches. He also struck against Barcelona in the Europa League and Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final to take his tally up to 24 in all competitions.

But Rashford will not want to remember this particular trip to Liverpool again as United still fight for four trophies this season. Although it seems a major longshot, the Red Devils are not out of the title race and are still in the FA Cup and Europa League - competitions they could both win.

Due to the Red Devils' excellent form this season, the result come as a surprise to Ten Hag, who admitted he didn't see the manner of the loss coming after a "decent" first-half from his side.

"I think we played a decent first half," Ten Hag told Match of the Day. "One mistake in organisation just before half-time. Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn't play as a team. It was unprofessional.

"Yes [I am angry]. Definitely. I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude.

"Second half we didn't have a winning attitude at all. We didn't stick to the plan and we didn't do our jobs. We didn't track back and it was really unprofessional."
