Marco van Basten criticises Manchester United for 'unproven' €100m Antony transfer

Ajax legend Marco van Basten has claimed that Manchester United are overpaying for Antony as the Brazilian winger sealed a move to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old was at Carrington on Monday ahead of completing his move from Ajax to United, with Antony set to become the club's second most-expensive signing in their history, behind Paul Pogba. United announced on Tuesday that they have agreed a €100m (£84m) deal with Ajax for the player.

Erik ten Hag will be reunited with Antony after the pair won back-to-back Eredivisie titles together during their time at Ajax, with the Brazilian attacker registering 24 goals and 22 assists in in 82 appearances for the Dutch side since joining the club in 2020.

While United have been desperate to complete a deal for the 22-year-old all summer, Van Basten seems to think Ajax are getting the better side of the deal.

"Antony worth €100m? No, by far no," Van Basten told Ziggo Sport on Monday night. The Dutch legend also questioned Antony's consistency and believes the Brazilian needs to work on his end product as his 'efficiency has not been high enough' in the last two years.

He added: "Antony hasn't proven much yet. Of course he played a few good games. But his efficiency has not been high in the last two years."

The Dutchman previously suggested that Ajax had spent too much money on Antony, and instead claimed the club should have promoted youth from their academy. Antony arrived at the Eredivisie club in 2020 from Sao Paulo for around €25m (£21m).

"At Ajax they have a very big mouth: our youth education is so great," he told Fox Sports back in 2020.

"And then you are going to buy a youth player for a mega amount. Something is wrong then.

"If you hit yourself so terribly in the chest that the youth education is so great, then of course it is ridiculous that you are going to buy a youth player from Brazil for €25m."
