Marco Tilio Celtic transfer sets new Australian record as Melbourne City list three key attributes

Marco Tilio's transfer to Celtic has set a new Australian record - just weeks after Jordan Bos' departure to Belgium had smashed it.

The 21-year-old attacker has joined Brendan Rodgers' ranks from Melbourne City on a five-year deal after hitting 20 goals in 86 appearances during his time with the A-League side. The attacking winger has expressed his excitement at moving to Europe with 'such a big club' as he looks to impress on the big stage. He's named the likes of Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic as players from the national team camp that helped make his decision much easier.

A Melbourne City club statement read: "Melbourne City FC can confirm the departure of Marco Tilio, with the talented young attacker set to join Scottish Premiership club, Celtic FC.

"The move for the City and Socceroos player has set a new Australian transfer record only weeks after former City player Jordan Bos’ departure to Belgian side KVC Westerlo had rewritten the record.

"Tilio, who had joined City ahead of the 2020/21 season, quickly became a fan favourite. His speed, natural attacking instincts and technical ability allowed him to stand out amongst a very talented group of young Australian players at the club."

Melbourne City FC CEO, Brad Rowse said:“Marco’s record-breaking transfer is a testament to the team we have here in Melbourne and shows there is no better place for Australia’s young players to continue their development and realise their dreams.

“Marco joins an exciting list of players who have come through the ranks at City and are now playing in some of Europe’s top leagues. It’s exciting for the player and for our fans, who will hopefully get to see one of our own playing regularly in the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League next season.”
