Marco Rubio claims RAF Fairford suspected terror plot ‘involved foreign actor’

  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire clearly involved a foreign actor, following the arrest of five British nationals.
  • The suspects were detained after three vans containing non-viable explosive material were discovered near the RAF base used by US forces, but all five have since been released on bail.
  • US President Donald Trump voiced surprise over the suspects being granted bail, stating he would not have allowed their release.
  • UK Counter Terrorism Policing is considering whether foreign states or their proxies were involved, while Iran has strongly denied any connection to the incident.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham chaired a Cobra meeting to discuss the situation, with Defence Secretary Wes Streeting noting that bail decisions are operational matters for the police.
