Marcelo left with head in hands after forgetting to copy Luis Suarez's Man City gesture

Real Madrid defender Marcelo was left with his head in his hands on Monday after stepping on the Manchester City badge.

Some footballers avoid stepping on crests out of respect. Atletico Madrid players Luis Suarez, Rodrigo de Paul and Angel Correa were filmed avoiding the Man City badge just before the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final earlier this month.

Atletico's rivals Real take on Man City at the Etihad on Tuesday evening in the first leg of their European semi-final clash. Pep Guardiola's side are aiming to reach a second successive final and win their maiden Champions League crown.

Real trained at the Etihad on Monday ahead of the game and were filmed making their way on to the pitch. In the video, Marcelo is seen laughing and joking with club and international team-mates Vinicius Junior and Eder Militao.

The latter then tells Marcelo he's walked over the Man City badge, leaving the veteran left-back with his head in his hands. Marcelo, who is aiming to win a fifth Champions League title before leaving Real this summer, will hope it's not a bad omen.

Fans were left baffled when a video of Vinicius avoiding the Real badge during a La Liga game against Valencia surfaced in January. "You kiss Madrid's badge, you don't step on it," explained the Brazilian winger when asked about his actions.

Man City boss Guardiola will be keeping a close eye on Vinicius, who's scored 17 goals in all competitions this season. The Spaniard is aware of the daunting task ahead of him but believes the Premier League champions can reach the final in Paris.

"It is not necessary to say how good Real Madrid are," said Guardiola on Monday. "If we have to compete with their history [as 13-time winners], we don't have any chance. The history is there, we can't change it, but it's 11 against 11 with one ball moving.

"We will try to be ourselves, compete well. We need to play two exceptional games to reach the final... it's an honour to be here in the semi-finals against Real Madrid," added Guardiola. "They've been here many times, we have in recent years."

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti added: "Well, we have to play well. It's going to be a very open tie.

"We'll have to spend a lot of time on the pitch and there are very mixed feelings ahead of these games because on the one hand, we're very happy because we're very close to the Champions League final, which is the most important competition in the world but on the other hand, we're facing a very tough opponent.

"We are used of course to this situation and these kind of opponents. Lately, we have had some tough matches, we've managed to beat teams who were considered to be favourites to win this competition and we're ready for another tough opponent and we'll try to do our best."
