Writer-producer Marc Bernardin is making a return to directing with his latest project, Deepest, Darkest. This horror anthology will feature a diverse group of creators of color exploring the theme of keeping secrets. The star-studded cast includes industry veterans such as Ernie Hudson, Phil LaMarr, Yetide Badaki, Raymond Lee, and Caitlin Bassett. The project is set to launch a crowdfunding campaign on August 27.
Bernardin, a WGA Award winner and Eisner-nominated creator, collaborated with actress Tiffany Smith, who also appeared in his directorial debut film, Splinter. Splinter gained recognition on the festival circuit, earning multiple awards after its successful Kickstarter campaign.
Akela Cooper, known for her work on M3GAN and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is serving as the executive producer for Deepest, Darkest. Bernardin expressed his motivation for the project, stating that many individuals of color share his passion for genres that often lack diversity. He aims to provide a platform for underrepresented voices in the industry.
The anthology will feature a lineup of talented writers and creatives, including LaToya Morgan, Deric A Hughes, Benjamin Raab, Ubah Mohamed, Lamont Magee, Sujata Day, and Kevin Avery. Some of these individuals will be stepping into directorial roles for the first time, showcasing their versatility in both behind-the-scenes and on-screen capacities.
Deepest, Darkest will explore a variety of genres, from horror and suspense to dark comedy and science fiction, all centered around the theme of secrets. Smith, who will play a central role in the anthology, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project and the shared vision of creating a genre piece that resonates with audiences.
The Kickstarter campaign aims to secure funding for principal production, with plans to cover post-production costs upon successful completion. Bernardin acknowledges the risks associated with crowdfunding but remains optimistic about the potential audience for cinematic short stories that challenge, entertain, and amplify diverse voices in storytelling.
The project is produced by Rachel Walker, Carrie Finn, and Kyle Smithers. With a talented ensemble of creators and a compelling premise, Deepest, Darkest promises to deliver a unique and inclusive cinematic experience for horror enthusiasts and genre fans alike.
