A Tyneside gym has raised more than £1500 in support of breast cancer charity Positively Pink - after 'rowing' the River Tyne.
Members, friends and family of Apex Pro Fitness, based in Shiremoor, took to the gym's rowing machines in hourly slots throughout Saturday, October 8, and between them covered 118km - the length of the Tyne. One member - Paul Macleod - rowed for 42km, the equivalent of a marathon.
The gym has previously raised cash for the likes of Maggie's Cancer Care and the Bay Foodbank, and this event was in support of Positivity Pink, which promotes wearing pink on October 21. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, research and care charity Breast Cancer Now’s designated annual month for raising awareness and money towards breast cancer research, and support for those affected by the disease.
Apex Pro Fitness owner Danny Ponton said: "I can’t say how proud and grateful I am for the members, their friends and family, for such a brilliant effort - they absolutely smashed it!
“Even some of our members’ kids got involved, and had great fun. Breast cancer is a disease that has touched many of us, so it was great to raise money and awareness towards such an important and worthy cause.”
