Mapperley community delighted with prosperous suburb that caters to the 'young and old'

Residents in one of Nottingham's go-to suburbs have spoken about what makes their area so special. Over time Mapperley has become a vibrant area, home to a wealth of trendy bars, coffee shops and supermarkets.

Recent figures revealed that two out of the top ten most expensive homes sold in Nottinghamshire between October and December 2021 were in Mapperley. People living nearby were largely unsurprised to hear that Mapperley has become such an attractive place go live, with one resident commenting that it caters "to young and old people." So we asked the question: what makes Mapperley such an appealing place to be these days?

Dennis Statham, 76, said: "You look around at the shops; you've got every shop you could imagine. There's enough bars for young people as well. I've lived in my flat since 1984 so I don't really know about changing house prices but I would be surprised if people didn't want to move here. You don't have to pay for parking in Mapperley either which I think is a massive plus.

"That's something that I feel must be a benefit for most people. Also, you've got the town 10 minutes away. It's certainly an area that seems to now cater to the young and old people."

Trisha Fletcher, 64, said: "It's difficult to say but I think it's a place that's more for the youngsters. There's nothing particular that stands out to me but if you talk to some of the younger people I'm sure they'll have great things to say - look at all the bars. I love all the coffee shops. I think they're a really good addition to the area and I'll usually be heading to one of them."

Jenna Fletcher, 36, who owns a catering business, said: "I definitely agree; I love all the bars around Mapperley. There's no specific one, I just love all of them. House prices seem to be fair and there seems to be more people coming into the area. There's so many lovely places all along Mapperley Top. It's definitely a place that's becoming a lot more appealing for people to move to and you can see why."

A detached house in Mapperley Plains, Gedling, was the second most expensive home sold in Nottinghamshire towards the end of last year, selling for £1,750,000 on November 4. A home in Spring Lane, Mapperley, Gedling, also cracked the top 10, selling for £1,200,000 on December 1. Mapperley top now appears to be the go-to area for anybody living in Mapperley, with one woman saying that it is "full of life."
