Manuka mural carries crucial message

A new mural called Yellow-Tailed Cockatoo by Canberra artist James Small, aka Smalls, now proudly adorns Endeavour House in Manuka.

The artwork was chosen by public vote in March last year.

The owner of the building, Ethical Property, had sought submissions from local artists to create an inspiring and engaging mural on the theme of climate change.

After being delayed for 12 months due to lockdowns and logistics complications, the artwork was now in its prominent place, visible from Canberra Avenue.

Ethical Property chief executive Adam Trevaskus was delighted the public could finally see the mural.

"We're really pleased to finally see this stunning piece of art take pride of place on Endeavour House, where it will be seen by thousands of commuters and local members of the community," he said.

Artist Smalls was excited to see his artwork come to life.

"With everything that has happened over the year it feels like a lifetime ago we started, so it's very humbling to be reminded that Canberra chose my piece out of the many outstanding submissions," he said.

The work was inspired by a need for urgent action against climate change, embodied by a decline in yellow-tailed black cockatoo numbers due to habitat clearance.

"It also offers an optimistic and hopeful resolve, that the future of our environment is in our hands," Smalls said.
