Premier League leaders Arsenal were kept honest by League One side Mansfield Town in a gripping fifth round tie illustrating all the magic of the FA Cup.
Mikel Arteta fielded a much-changed side from the one which beat Brighton in the top flight this week, and Mansfield took advantage, peppering Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal and more than holding their own.
A fine strike by Noni Madueke put the visitors ahead shortly before half-time, but after the break Nigel Clough’s Mansfield levelled thanks to super-sub Will Evans, who only needed four minutes after coming off the bench to restore parity.
Evans had previously scored against Manchester United in the FA Cup for Newport and the competition brought out the best in him again.
But another substitute, Eberechi Eze, produced a stunning moment of individual quality to curl a powerful shot into the back of the net and restore Arsenal’s lead, with the Gunners - now playing in a more recognisable formation and with many of their best players brought in - keeping in front to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal forced to call on big guns to see off spirited minnows Mansfield in FA Cup tie for the ages
16:23 , Richard JollyEberechi Eze’s previous FA Cup goal brought one of the famous old competition’s most treasured upsets in recent years. His next one may have prevented one of the greatest ever.
Eze remains on course to win the FA Cup in consecutive years with different clubs, just as Arsenal carry their quest for the quadruple still deeper into the season.
And yet it is not fanciful to imagine it could have been Mansfield Town in the quarter-finals, with another miracle shaped by a managerial Clough in the East Midlands. “You have that nagging feeling we could have nicked it,” said Nigel Clough.

Arsenal forced to call on big guns to see off Mansfield in FA Cup tie for the ages
'A proper FA Cup game' - Mikel Arteta
15:30 , Flo CliffordArsenal boss Mikel Arteta tells TNT Sports: “It was a proper FA Cup game. Credit to Mansfield, the stadium, the atmosphere, the fans created a bit of banter. Great for them to keep pushing the team, They made it really difficult for us.
“You have to be much more ruthless in front of goal, we had four or five big open chances that we didn't convert. Then the margin is smaller and you give the opponent hope. We also made a mistake for the goal.
“But we had two 16-year-olds in the starting line-up, I don't think that's ever happened.
“Everybody feels involved. We have the desire that game by game we are closer to the things we can achieve.”
'I wanted to prove a point today' - Will Evans
15:20 , Flo CliffordMansfield goalscorer Will Evans said: “I wanted to prove a point today - not just to the team but to myself as well. It's typical isn't it, for me to have a league goal drought and then come on for a half against Arsenal and have a goal against them.
“Games come thick and fast. We are onto the next game. So you don't really have much time to take it all in. One day, I might just go through my old goals and enjoy them. But we’ve got a shift again on Tuesday night [against Reading].”
'We wanted to make it a proper cup tie' - Clough
15:11 , Flo CliffordNigel Clough continues: “The effort they had was incredible, and we wanted to make it a proper cup tie and a tough game for Arsenal and make them uncomfortable, and I thought we did that.
“Overall, the lads were fantastic. We cut in from this angle a bit. You need a break in the box. We set the tone earlier on. We didn't want this 80% Arsenal having possession and controlling the game, or they would have picked us off.
“The number of efforts we have had today is absolutely brilliant.”
'We could have done it!' - Nigel Clough
15:00 , Flo CliffordMansfield manager Nigel Clough tells TNT Sports: “I thought the effort the players gave was absolutely incredible. We wanted to make it a proper cup tie and make it uncomfortable for Arsenal. I thought we did that.
“We're very proud. We said to the lads, if we do concede - don't concede a second one. Then it becomes a bit too easy. That didn't happen today.
“We could have done it. But I think everyone else enjoyed it.”
'The gaffer said "just have a go"' - Rhys Oates
14:50 , Flo CliffordMansfield forward Rhys Oates tells TNT Sports: “Before the game the gaffer said 'Just have a go. We were not expected to win the game, so have a go and enjoy it'.
“We created more chances than we thought we could, and we have given them a game.
“I had a few chances. I feel like I could have put one away myself. The players they have got, they are going to make good interceptions. You just have to keep going.
“It was a dream come true. I said as a child I wanted to play for Arsenal or against Arsenal and I have managed to do that now.”
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:40 , Flo CliffordMax Dowman impressed again on his full FA Cup debut, becoming Arsenal’s youngest-ever player in the competition but looking a natural in the senior side. He had chances to score in the first half and probably should have given the Gunners more of a cushion, but was a fine creative outlet and certainly kept the Mansfield defence - and keeper Liam Roberts, who had an excellent day - busy.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:30 , Flo Clifford
'Tough place to play' - Eze
14:25 , Flo CliffordMatchwinner Eberechi Eze tells TNT Sports of his goal: “I saw the space and saw opportunity to to take it and took it. Tough place to play today.
On the fight for the quadruple, he says: “It's what we aim for and pushing for. To be in this position is important, it's where we want to be.
“It's the mentality of taking each day as it comes. Do what needs to be done. If we don't trust the process, we don't get there.”
FULL-TIME: Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:20 , Flo CliffordWhat a day for Mansfield, who are warmly applauded by their fans, who are still here in numbers.

FULL-TIME: Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:17 , Flo CliffordA costly afternoon for Arsenal too, with Calafiori and Trossard both picking up injuries and having to go off.
Kepa gives a rather morose-looking Salmon a hug; a tough outing for the 16-year-old today.
FULL-TIME: Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:13 , Richard JollyA superb FA Cup tie. On the balance of chances, Arsenal probably just about deserved victory but Mansfield had 18 shots, forced Mikel Arteta to change shape, to bring on players such as Bukayo Saka and the match-winner Eberechi Eze. What an effort by them, but Arsenal's quadruple quest continues.
FULL-TIME: Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:11 , Flo Clifford‘90+6: That’s it!
A much tougher outing than Arteta would have liked; Arsenal were made to work much harder in this encounter than they have been in several Premier League games this year. Huge credit to Mansfield.
Matchwinner Eze is all smiles as he hugs and shakes hands with the home players.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:10 , Flo Clifford‘90+5: Martinelli goes for goal but it’s wide!
Roberts punts it up the pitch for one more go. The Mansfield fans are still singing at the top of their voices. This has been a brilliant outing for the home side, even though it isn’t going their way.
SAVE! Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:07 , Flo Clifford‘90+3: Evans gets away from 18-year-old Dixon down the left channel but Mosquera swings across to boot it clear.
Hewitt has a throw-in, it’s flicked on by Blake-Tracy, headed forward to Tottenham loanee Irow but Kepa gets his gloves to it!
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:05 , Flo Clifford‘90: Six minutes added on here. Madueke aims for the top corner but spanks it wide, to gleeful jeers.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
14:02 , Flo Clifford‘88: Knoyle, king of the goal-line clearance, is replaced by Hewitt. Mansfield are looking a bit tired and jaded now.
SAVE! Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:59 , Flo Clifford‘85: Saka fancies a bit of super-sub action now too but Roberts does superbly to save from the England international, flinging his legs in the way of a low strike.

Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:55 , Flo Clifford‘81: Arsenal deal with the corner. McLaughlin is booked for a theatrical jump and dive in the box after a gentle challenge. “Same old Mansfield, always cheating,” is the cry from the visiting fans.
More Mansfield subs: Oates and McLaughlin go off, Adeboyejo and Irow come on.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:52 , Richard JollyA debut for Arsenal for Jaden Dixon who was signed from Stoke. So, in a past era, was Lee Dixon, perhaps Arsenal's greatest right-back. They probably aren't related, though.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:52 , Flo Clifford‘78: Oates collides with Mosquera near the backline and wants a penalty! It would perhaps be generous. The referee says corner kick.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:50 , Flo Clifford‘77: Arsenal opt not to risk Calafiori, who is okay to get up and walk off the pitch.
More substitutes: he and Dowman come off, Saka and Dixon are on. A very good outing for Dowman.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:49 , Flo Clifford‘75: Danger alert as Madueke sets off, but McLaughlin chases him down and drives him wide of goal, nullifying that particular attempt.
Eze is next into the book for dissent after conceding a free-kick. Calafiori is down with what looks like a hamstring problem, which the Mansfield supporters are loudly derisive of.
Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:45 , Flo Clifford‘71: It’s been a tale of the super-subs so far: Evans took four minutes and seven seconds after coming on before scoring, while Eze took four minutes and 28.
Calafiori gets a booking for back-chat. Mansfield have the free-kick, Akins flicks it on - did it take a deflection off an Arsenal jersey?
The hosts have a corner. Good delivery by Lewis, but headed away by Norgaard... Mansfield recycle it but it comes a bit too quickly for Akins at the far post!
Into the box again... Lewis grapples with Timber and finally Kepa leaps up to save.
GOAL! Mansfield 1-2 Arsenal
13:41 , Flo Clifford‘66: The hosts have been brilliant but Eze produces a moment of quality now and there’s not much they can do about that. Norgaard rolls it to Eze, who cuts inside and whips it around his marker and the keeper into the roof of the net.
That quietens the ground somewhat.
SAVE! Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:39 , Flo Clifford‘65: Arsenal have five on two in the Mansfield box, Dowman cuts it back for Jesus - the keeper is beaten but Knoyle gets right under the bar for a superb goal-line clearance!
It goes behind for an Arsenal corner, but it’s cleared and Mansfield counter... Evans pokes his toe out and gets there at full stretch but Kepa saves!
Baptism of fire for Marli Salmon
13:37 , Richard JollyA difficult first start for Marli Salmon, who struggled against Rhys Oates in the first half and gave the ball away for Will Evans' equaliser. Arteta will hope Jurrien Timber brings more reliability at right-back.
Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:36 , Flo Clifford‘62: Drama... Reed goes into the book for a late challenge, but VAR are looking at a foul by Salmon on the edge of the box, pulling down Abbott.
VAR agrees with the referee’s decision, saying it took place on the edge of the area, so no penalty. But nervy times for Arsenal. Arteta looks apoplectic.
Time for changes: Salmon and Havertz are off, Timber and Eze are on. For the hosts, Abott comes off for Lewis.
Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:32 , Flo Clifford‘59: It goes behind for a corner, but Calafiori nods Madueke’s delivery over the bar. He looks to complain that it took a deflection, but nothing doing.
Reed goes for a low, long-range effort rather than squaring to Akins but it doesn’t trouble Kepa too much, and Reed holds out an apologetic hand to his teammate.
SAVE! Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:28 , Flo Clifford‘54: Brilliant save by Roberts, it’s Dowman again who just floats into the box, takes a left-footed strike - but Roberts flings out his arm to palm it away!

Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:27 , Flo Clifford‘53: Salmon was at fault there, giving the ball to Evans under zero pressure, and that’s a bad moment for the 16-year-old.
But Mosquera really should have dealt with that a lot better, leaving the super-sub acres of room in the box.

Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:25 , Rciahrd JollyWill Evans scored against Manchester United in the FA Cup for Newport. Now he has struck against Arsenal. Clearly the man for such occasions.
GOAL! Mansfield 1-1 Arsenal
13:24 , Flo Clifford‘50: Well, well, well!
Mansfield counter, Evans - off the bench - powers down into the box, gets around Mosquera, takes a touch, and fires a low strike past Kepa!
Bedlam in the One Call Stadium!
Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:23 , Flo Clifford‘49: The visitors, in a more recognisable shape, are on top so far. They break in numbers and at speed and have a couple of set-piece opportunities.
Corner for Arsenal... Madueke curls it toward Martinelli at the near post but Blake-Tracy hooks it clear!
SECOND HALF: Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:19 , Flo CliffordOn we go with the second half. Will Evans is on for Tyler Roberts, who had some good chances in that first 45.
Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:10 , Richard JollyA classy goal separates these sides but, for much of the first half, Mansfield were bridging a gap of 59 league places.
HALF-TIME: Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:05 , Flo CliffordA not so convincing half from Arsenal but after a formation reshuffle - indicative that Arteta knows he got it wrong - the Gunners looked more convincing.
Noni Madueke’s excellent 41st-minute strike is the difference.

CLOSE! Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:03 , Flo Clifford‘45+2: 37-year-old Akins latches onto a McLaughlin ball into the box but gets his header all wrong, firing over the bar!
Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
13:02 , Flo Clifford‘45: Madueke fancies another but can’t keep this one on target.
Two minutes added on.

GOAL! Mansfield 0-1 Arsenal
12:57 , Flo Clifford‘41: Noni Madueke gets the breakthrough! He forces a save from Roberts and the keeper is barely back up before Martinelli threads the ball back to Madueke on the edge of the box, and he bends a lovely effort into the top corner.
He barely celebrates; he’s had a bit of a sobering afternoon up until that point.
Formation change for Arsenal after difficult first half-hour
12:56 , Richard JollyLeandro Trossard was injured but the decision to bring on Piero Hincapie showed Arteta accepted his formation had failed. He has brought on a defender, gone to a back four, looked for a more solid base.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:54 , Flo Clifford‘38: Confirmation of that: Hincapie comes on for Trossard, who looks to have tweaked his knee.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:53 , Flo Clifford‘37: Trossard is down getting some treatment, which the Mansfield support duly jeer. It looks like Hincapie is getting ready to come on.
SAVE! Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:51 , Flo Clifford‘35: Madueke positively shanks an attempt into the crowd, who enjoy it immensely.
Oates has been a dangerous for Mansfield and now he has the beating of Calafiori, latching onto a good ball by Russell and crossing at a sharp angle near the byline - but Kepa gets to it!
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:49 , Richard Jolly‘32: Max Dowman has had a couple of chances to get his first Arsenal goal. On both occasions, he has shot straight at Liam Roberts, but the 16-year-old has been lively and elusive. He has proved able to skip past defenders.

Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:45 , Flo Clifford‘29: Blake-Tracy turns Madueke’s cross behind; the Arsenal fans shout for handball but nothing doing. The resulting corner clips the post and bounces out, Arsenal recycle... jeers and whistles erupt as Madueke hits the side-netting.
End-to-end at the moment. Arsenal counter again, Dowman is right in the centre of the box, but his rather tame effort is straight into the gloves of Roberts.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:43 , Flo Clifford‘26: Arsenal have faced eight shots so far - the most they have faced in the first 15 minutes of a game this season. It’s been good from Mansfield.
Now Dowman and Martinelli play a nice one-two, the teenager letting Martinelli find space on the left, and it’s a nervy moment for Roberts who spills the Brazilian’s shot. It should be a corner, but the referee pulls it back for something in the build-up.

CHANCE! Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:40 , Flo Clifford‘23: The ball is laid off to Dowman, who tees up Trossard, but it’s at an awkward angle down the right... a wild, wild shot into the stands.
Arteta doesn’t look very impressed.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:37 , Flo Clifford‘20: Arsenal venture into the Mansfield penalty area for the first time in a while, but Reed is wise to the danger and steps in as Trossard, on the spin, aims to find Jesus.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:35 , Richard JollyMansfield are giving this a real go. They have had four good efforts at goal in the last eight minutes. This is where Arsenal's lack of defensive personnel could cost them. Now both the League One team and their crowd have more belief.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:33 , Flo Clifford‘17: Mansfield go long, suddenly work it forward, and Oates goes for an acrobatic volley in the box - but blasts it wide. Chances, though...
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:31 , Flo Clifford‘15: Dowman draws the foul from Reed in the middle of the park as the teenager tries to dart away.
A very decent spell for Mansfield, who are keeping Arsenal on their toes.
CHANCE! Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:29 , Flo Clifford‘13: Mansfield are getting lively now and the crowd are loving it - it’s chaos in the box, Mosquera hesitates down the left, and Reed - the hero against Burnley - flashes an effort goalward but Kepa keeps it out!
Mansfield win the corner, it pinballs around wildly and eventually blasted over the bar. Messy from Arsenal.
Now Roberts goes for another curling attempt which just fizzes wide!
SAVE! Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:27 , Flo Clifford‘9: First chance for Mansfield! Tyler Roberts bends a decent curling effort towards the top corner, but Kepa palms it away.
Quickly down the other end though and (keeper) Roberts makes a point-blank save from Trossard! Belatedly, the offside flag goes up.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:25 , Richard JollyAn Arsenal formation with a difference today. Mikel Arteta tends to have a frugal and solid back four. Here there are only three defenders, one defensive midfielder, in Christian Norgaard, and six attack-minded players ahead of them.

Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:23 , Flo Clifford‘7: It’s deep to the back post, cleared but only as far as Jesus... he tries to recycle it to Dowman, but Mansfield get it clear. An early wave of pressure withstood.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:22 , Flo Clifford‘6: Corner taken... Calafiori squares it to Mosquera, whose shot takes a deflection and bobbles out for another corner.
Time for another. Yet more set-piece magic from the Gunners?
CHANCE! Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:21 , Flo Clifford‘5: A reminder that VAR is in use for all these fifth-round ties - let’s see if there’s any controversy in that department today.
Salmon has been busy so far... and his fellow teenager Dowman shows a glimpse of his star power as he floats into the box, intercepts a sloppy pass from keeper Roberts, and forces him into a save.
Now the 16-year-old wins the first corner of the game. Lively on his return from injury.
Mansfield 0-0 Arsenal
12:18 , Flo Clifford‘2: McLaughlin brings down Madueke, who ends up in a heap in the mud. Now Roberts clears out 16-year-old Salmon. Arsenal now exactly getting the red carpet rolled out for them here.
KICK-OFF: Mansfield v Arsenal
12:16 , Flo CliffordAway we go!
Arsenal caught out by Mansfield facilities
12:14 , Richard JollyThe One Call Stadium is scarcely the most traditional name ever, but there is a proud boast in one of the stands - "the oldest profesisional football ground in the world". It is also a ground that, for 25 years, only had three stands, until a fourth opened recently. As Arsenal arrived, some of the locals noted they had come in two (large, deluxe) coaches. "There's only room for one," said one fan.
Teams are out!
12:13 , Flo CliffordThe Mansfield faithful are producing quite the atmosphere - and booing and jeering Arteta coming out for an interview, as well as the opposition players walking out.
A huge day for the League One side, whose fans look determined to enjoy this.
Moments to go!
Team news reminder
12:10 , Flo CliffordMansfield Town XI: Roberts, Knoyle, Oshilaja, Blake-Tracy, Akins, Abbott, Reed, McLaughlin, Russell, T. Roberts, Oates
Arsenal XI: Kepa, Salmon, Mosquera, Hincapie, Trossard, Norgaard, Madueke, Havertz, Martinelli, Dowman, Jesus
When is the FA Cup fifth-round draw?
12:04 , Flo CliffordThe draw for the fifth round will likely take place on Monday 9 March, before the match between West Ham and Brentford.
'Once in a lifetime' game
11:57 , Richard JollySome games can be called once in a lifetime. But, as Mansfield last faced Arsenal 97 years ago, this feels even rarer than that.
The Clough family have more of a pedigree in the European Cup than the FA Cup, which Brian never won, but Nigel has been this season’s great giant-killer, taking Mansfield past Sheffield United and Burnley.
He encounters a much-changed and attacking Arsenal team, with Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke playing as wing-backs today.
Form guide
11:50 , Flo CliffordThings aren’t looking good for Mansfield, who sit 16th in League One and haven’t won any of their past nine league games.
They are only five points above the relegation zone and staying in the division is more of a priority than this Cup tie.
Arsenal meanwhile hold a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League and are unbeaten in their last nine top-flight games.
They will rotate heavily as Arteta dreams of an unprecedented quadruple, but even a second-string team would be expected to avoid an unlikely upset.

Arsenal team news
11:25 , Flo CliffordNine changes for Mikel Arteta’s side, with 16-year-old Max Dowman becoming Arsenal’s youngest-ever FA Cup player on his return from an injury layoff which has kept him out of action since November.
Another teenager, Marli Salmon, gets his first ever start for the club after a couple of appearances off the bench, with only Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Martinelli retained from the team which beat Brighton midweek.
Kepa Arrizabalaga comes in between the sticks, with Kai Havertz, Christian Norgaard, Leandro Trossard, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus also starting.
Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Gabriel and David Raya all miss out entirely, while Myles Lewis-Skelly is suspended after picking up too many bookings.
It’s a bit of an odd line-up, incredibly light in defensive midfield.
Arsenal line-up

Pitch quality may influence Arsenal team selection
11:05 , Flo CliffordMikel Arteta said the quality of the League One pitch might influence his team selection for today.
He said: “It can do. If there is a player who is carrying some injuries that the pitch can effect him in the wrong way, especially with certain muscles, but hopefully we will have the ones we need fit and available.
“It [the pitch] is normal. It’s the beauty of this competition - you have to go there and adapt and make the most out of it.”

Team news
10:30 , Flo CliffordWilliam Saliba could make a return for Arsenal but will likely not be risked in this type of tie, with the same going for Martin Odegaard. Ben White will likely miss out on the squad, while Mikel Merino remains the only long-term absentee.
Kai Havertz, Max Dowman and Gabriel Martinelli will be among those looking to start in a starting XI that will likely see wholesale changes, but Myles Lewis-Skelly misses out through suspension.

When is Mansfield Town vs Arsenal?
10:14 , Flo CliffordThe match is scheduled to kick off at 12.15pm on Saturday, 7 March at Field Mill in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Mansfield v Arsenal
10:06 , Flo CliffordMansfield saw off top-flight side Burnley in the previous round, winning 2-1 at Turf Moor to set up a tie with somewhat stiffer opposition: the Premier League leaders.
Arsenal meanwhile scored four times in 17 minutes in an emphatic display against another League One side, Wigan.
So Nigel Clough’s Stags face something of an uphill challenge at home today, even against a second-string Gunners squad as Mikel Arteta juggles fighting on four fronts.

Good morning
10:00 , Flo CliffordHello and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of Mansfield vs Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
59 places in the football pyramid separate these two sides - can Mansfield spring another extraordinary surprise, or will Arsenal keep their hopes of four trophies in this campaign alive?
