Mansfield nightclub with mock Tudor features could be turned into homes

A closed Nottinghamshire pub and nightclub could soon be transformed into homes. The vacant Town House pub in Stockwell Gate, Mansfield, would be turned into nine apartments if plans are approved by Mansfield District Council.

The existing mock Tudor building, which was most recently used as Vibe bar and nightclub, would be refurbished and retained, with an extension and internal changes creating the new homes. The prospective developer said the property has an "interesting" front but internally and at the rear has previously had extensive changes and extensions.

They added the appearance and the scale of the proposed scheme had been carefully considered. The building's Stockwell Gate side would remain unchanged with existing chimneys and all architectural elements retained.

A Mansfield District Council conservation officer said the building was built in the mid-20th century. At this time it operated as a pub called the ‘Ye Crowne Hostelry’, possibly incorporating some of the previous buildings on the site from as far back as 1875.

The current property is not statutory listed or situated within a conservation area, but is considered to be a Non-Designated Heritage Asset on the Council’s register for Local Heritage Assets. The conservation officer outlined the entire building should be retained, highlighting its Mock Tudor features, but endorsed the plans as an improvement as "it contributes more positively to the setting than what currently exists".

Nottinghamshire County Council's highways department had no objections to the project, according to planning documents. Similarly, Mansfield District Council's Environmental Health department, which assessed noise, environment, and opening hours impact, had no objections.

In a planning document, Marsh:Grochowski Architects, on behalf of applicant Inderjit Singh, said: "We believe that the enclosed application is in compliance with the relevant Local Plan Policies and we hope that proof has been provided that the proposal is well designed, sustainable and contextual and respects its surrounding setting.

"Every effort has been taken to contribute positively to the character and appearance of this area of Mansfield for many years to come." The planning application is pending consideration by Mansfield District Council.
