Mansfield care home in 'special measures' after inadequate CQC inspection

A care home in Mansfield has been rated inadequate after a CQC inspection. Clipstone Hall and Lodge, which is located in Mansfield Road in Clipstone Village, Mansfield, provides accommodation and care for up to 90 people over the age of 65, including some who are living with dementia.

The inspection, which took place in April this year, was unannounced - there are currently 60 people living at the care home. In a report released earlier this month, it was rated as inadequate in terms of how safe it is and also how well-led it is. Clipstone Hall was also found to require improvement when it came to how responsive, caring and effective it is, recieving an inadequata rating overall.

The report found that staff felt there were not enough care staff on shift and that seniors had other duties and were unable to always assist with supporting people. They explained: "It can be quite hectic, and we have people who needdouble up support, so when seniors have meetings there is no one to replace them."

It was found, however, that long serving staff knew people well and this experience gave them a good insight into what risks peoplefaced. People and relatives told us they felt safe within the home. One person said, "They know me and my needs. I feel safe and I'm included in everything; I couldn't be happier."

The inspectors found that people were not always treated with dignity and respect and were not always supported by staff. People did not always recieve their medecines on time or in a safe manner and were placed at risk of infection, communal areas were also not cleaned regularly as staff "did not have enough time to incorporate cleaning duties alongside care tasks".

Clipstone Hall and Lodge has now been placed in special measures, meaning it is being kept under review and will be re-inspected within six months. If improvements are not made in this time, the CQC will begin the process of preventing the provider, Burlington Care Homes Limited, from operating this service.

Burlington Care Homes Limited has been approached for comment.
