A manhunt is under way after a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot in south-east Queensland overnight after she was allegedly chased down a street by two men.
Queensland police believe the incident in Caboolture, a town around an hour north of Brisbane, was not a “random attack”.
DI David Harbison told reporters on Sunday morning that police were searching for two men and were yet to take any suspects into custody.
“The public nature of this crime is alarming,” he said.
“Early investigations indicate that deceased was assaulted by two male persons who may have chased her down Railway Parade. During that assault, the deceased received a gunshot wound.”
Police said they were called to an address on Railway Parade in Caboolture just after midnight on Sunday morning where they found the woman.
“She was not breathing. Police attempted to revive her … Unfortunately, she could not be revived,” Harbison said.
“Part of the investigation is why she’s come to be in that area.”
Harbison told reporters that it was too early to determine the woman’s cause of death, but the police were treating the incident as a homicide.
“There’s people out there that know who these people are … do the right thing, a young 23-year-old has lost her life in tragic circumstances, so do the right thing and come forward,” he said.
“This is an appeal for anyone that was around the area of Railway Parade … just before midnight last night, or shortly thereafter, who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the street, or may have dashcam footage to come forward and speak to police.
“I want to reassure public there’s a dedicated taskforce of local detectives as well as the specialist homicide detectives have been deployed to investigate this crime, and they will bring the persons responsible to justice as quickly as possible.”
