A man believed to be responsible for the shooting and killing of eight people in suburban Chicago, took his own life following a confrontation with law enforcement in Texas, according to police.

The man was identified as 23-year-old Romeo Nance and was found near Natalia, Texas by U.S. Marshals where he shot himself after a confrontation, The Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

Nance allegedly shot and killed eight people in three different Chicago locations in Will County and Joliet on Monday. Police did not provide details for a motive of the killings but mentioned that Nance knew the victims.

"I've been a policeman 29 years and this is probably the worst crime scene I've ever been associated with," Joliet Police Chief William Evans said during a news conference outside the Joliet homes Monday evening.

The killings left neighbors on edge after police warned Nance was on the loose and was considered "armed and dangerous."

Nance was then located headed south on Interstate 35. The Medina County Sheriff's Office in Texas were contacted and a standoff occurred between Nance and police from multiple agencies at a gas station, where he shot himself.

Teresa Smart lived a block away from where seven of the victims were found and was worried after hearing about the killings.

"This is way too close to home," she said in an interview. "I keep looking out the window and double checking my doors. It's super scary."
