Mango civic body takes steps to avert water crisis

JAMSHEDPUR: Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC), one of the three civic bodies in Jamshedpur, has initiated multiple measures to prevent water scarcity in its command areas.

To begin with, officials said that they have begun work on repairing defunct handpumps in next one week and have issued a number (8987586386) where people can request for water tanker services in the event of irregular supply from taps. The beneficiary will have to pay in lieu of the service.

MNAC’s special officer, Deepak Sahay, said that the city manager, Jeetendra Kumar, has been made the nodal officer for tanker services.

“Instructions have been also been issued to the officials concerned to provide water connection within 24 hours upon receipt of the application,” he said, adding that servicing of all the water pipelines will also be initiated soon.

The Mango urban municipal body has a perennial history of water supply shortage during summer.

Over 2.5 lakh people live in MNAC command. The Mango Drinking Water project caters to 20,000 households across the six zones supplying 40 million litres of water daily.

“There are 300 plus handpumps under MNAC area, survey and repairing work is going on, said city manager,” said Kumar.

The supply of water gets affected due to the irregular electricity, among other factors, during the summer.

"Slum dwellers living in the low-lying areas confront water crisis mostly due to the run-down handpumps," said 48-year-old, Kamlesh, resident of post office road, Mango.

The Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, Jamshedpur division, executive engineer, Abhay Toppo, said that people living in the 170 panchayat areas in Adityapur can call up 18003456502 toll number for repairing of defunct handpumps.

The official also said that five new handpumps will be installed in each of the 170 panchayats.

The residents living in Rahargora, Barigora, on the outskirts of the Steel city, have complained of irregular supply of water for the past four days.
