Manchester United whacked with huge fine after Cristiano Ronaldo-led meltdown against Newcastle United

Manchester United have been whacked with a huge fine following a Cristiano Ronaldo-led meltdown in the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United last month.

The Portugal legend tried to take advantage of an unclear free-kick situation before slotting it past Nick Pope and claiming a goal. But referee Craig Pawson chalked off the strike.

Subsequently, the Man United team surrounded the official in a bitter protest before being hit with an FA charge. The FA have now issued a £42,000 fine for the incident but the Red Devils have faced more punishment for similar actions in the 1-1 draw v Chelsea. The total fine for both matches suffered by Man United was £82,000.

The FA say Man United: "Failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion."

Toon keeper Nick Pope said at the time: "The free-kick was slightly in the wrong place and obviously Fabby’s [Schar] rolled it back to me and walked off.

"I think you know by everyone’s body language that you know he’s not meaning to take a free-kick. I think the referee sorted it out quickly and fair play to him for making the right decision and squashed it straight away."

Manchester United join Liverpool and Tottenham in receiving charges in games against Newcastle. A bench spat between Liverpool and Newcastle saw both clubs fined. Spurs picked up a £20,000 fine after protesting furiously to the referee after Callum Wilson's lob in the 2-1 win for the Magpies last month.
