Manchester United vs Tottenham LIVE

Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes scored as Manchester United defeated 10-man Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday, tightening their grip on fourth place and piling the pressure on Thomas Frank.

Tottenham lost captain Cristian Romero to a straight red card after 29 minutes following a reckless tackle on United midfielder Casemiro, deepening the selection woes for his side, who are already without a host of players through injury.

Mbeumo gave United the lead on 38 minutes when a well-worked corner routine created a shooting chance for the Cameroon international, before Fernandes added a second with 10 minutes remaining.

Fernandes added a second late on to seal a fully deserved win for United in which they never looked unduly troubled by the visitors, who managed a single shot on target in the game.

United are unbeaten in their last seven league games and have won all four since Michael Carrick returned as manager. In contrast, Tottenham are winless in their last seven league games, and the limp performance will have done little to ease the pressure on manager Frank.

Today may not be a foregone conclusion.

Spurs are unbeaten in six against Manchester United, and beat them four times last season. They were denied another win in November by De Ligt’s 97th-minute equaliser.

But, still: Old Trafford, momentum and no Amorim in the dugout.

Carrick on Spurs

12:02 , Alex Young

"They have got some really good players all over the pitch. They have had a lot of issued with injuries and changes but you are fully aware of their strengths and what they can bring.

“They showed that last week, a small sample of what they can do, how they came back into the game. And Thomas is a really good manager and coach.

“We respect what we are up against and we will be right at the top of our game."

Frank on Spurs team news

11:55 , Alex Young

"Micky [van de Ven] is a top centre-back and he has had a top season, maybe his best for a long, long time. His partnership with Cuti [Romero] is very good and they are getting stronger and stronger together.

"Pape [Sarr] went away to Afcon and then he played against Frankfurt and it was too early to play back to back games. I liked his performance against Frankfurt so he comes back into the team.

"Wilson [Odobert] started five games in a row for us so he needed a bit of a refresher. I'm very happy with him, he is in a top place and he looks very lively and positive so it is very important that he plays."

Frank on Man Utd

11:49 , Alex Young

“They are a team that plays with confidence after three big wins, and two of the wins where they had to come back from an equaliser against Fulham and Arsenal.

“They have a massive threat up front but we are ready for it."

Carrick on Sesko

11:40 , Alex Young

"Ben’s been fantastic. He’s going to be a big player for us and everything I’ve seen from him is really encouraging.

“Today was just a decision I’ve mad,e but Ben will come on and make a big difference for us again."

Michael Carrick sticks with an unchanged starting line-up as Manchester United aim to extend their winning run to four matches.

It is three changes for Tottenham, with, most importantly, Micky van de Ven returning from injury.

After all the noise in the week after his latest social media outburst, Cristian Romero is fit and starts for Tottenham this afternoon.

The Spurs captain lines up back alongside Micky van de Ven as Frank sticks with a 3-4-3 formation with Palhinha at the back.

Sarr partners Gallagher in midfield, while Gray reprises his role as a makeshift right wing-back.

Odobert, whose pace in transition will be key, comes back into the starting lineup.

Frank explains why Gallagher is key to his long-term plans

11:06 , Alex Young

Thomas Frank believes that Conor Gallagher can be a big part of building the culture he is looking to instil at Tottenham.

Gallagher’s charging run and cross for Dominic Solanke’s miraculous scorpion kick equaliser against Manchester City last weekend epitomised the very best parts of Spurs’ spirited second-half fightback.

Frank was left delighted with Gallagher’s impact against City and admits the England midfielder has been exemplary since arriving from Atletico Madrid midway through the January transfer window.

“I think Conor has a lot of the bits we need to get to where we want,” Frank said ahead of Spurs’ trip to Manchester United.

“His character is unbelievable. He is a player who can build a top culture going forward.

“His work-rate and how he can carry the team on his back, more or less, though it’s not only about one player.

“That situation (the build-up to Solanke’s second goal v City) is a fantastic situation you’re referring to, where he’s running very hard, winning the second ball in front of two players and then put a cross in and we scored from that.”

Thomas Frank has reasons for optimism as Tottenham face Man Utd test

10:55 , Alex Young

What Thomas Frank would give to talk about football again.

Even when things are going comparatively better than they have recently, with Tottenham unbeaten in four games in all competitions, the atmosphere around the club remains volatile.

The aftermath of Tottenham’s miraculous 2-2 draw with Manchester City has been dominated by Cristian Romero’s most recent comments about the club’s hierarchy - the second time in a month the subject of his captain’s social media activity has been brought to light.

There was spirit and character as Spurs came from two goals down to rescue a point against City. That momentum has quickly been lost amidst the noise of a disappointing Deadline Day and Romero’s explosive Instagram post.

Still, in salvaging a draw, Spurs clawed back some respectability, having been savaged by Pep Guardiola’s side in the first-half.

Spurs’ season has been a tale of two halves too often. Piecing together a performance over 90 minutes remains an issue in the Premier League, where the tempo shifts are dramatic and Spurs struggle to keep control.

There have been signs of progress, and the return of Dominic Solanke has been transformational.

Score prediction

10:27 , Alex Young

Tottenham have done well to battle for strong results in recent weeks despite their mounting injuries, but their luck may well run out at Old Trafford.

United have been a team transformed under Carrick, rampaging to wins over two of Europe’s finest sides in Arsenal and City in recent outings.

Facing an injury-ravaged Spurs, the Red Devils will fully expect to make it four wins on the bounce.

Manchester United to win, 2-1.

Early Tottenham team news

10:20 , Alex Young

Tottenham have been boosted by the return to fitness of Micky van de Ven, who has missed the last two games.

Fellow centre-back, Kevin Danso, remains on the sidelines after hyper-extending his toe ahead of last weekend’s dramatic 2-2 draw with City.

Djed Spence, meanwhile, is closing in on a return from a calf injury, with Frank admitting he could be in contention against United.

With Danso and potentially Spence out, Spurs’ injury list is into double figures, but Frank has been boosted by the news that captain Cristian Romero has overcome the bout of illness that saw him withdrawn at half-time against City.

Radu Dragusin could retain his place in the side should Frank stick with a three-man defence, but Frank has a decision to make after a couple of impressive performances from Joao Palhinha in a hybrid auxiliary centre-back role.

The Portuguese midfielder has looked assured in possession and aggressive in the tackle, completing the most tackles of any player against Frankfurt and City.

Frank could also be tempted to make changes in attack after leaving Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel on the bench against City.

Odobert and Tel have been among Spurs’ brightest performers in what has been a difficult period for the club, and the former could come in for the ineffectual Randal Kolo Muani on the right wing.

Dominic Solanke is also available despite rolling his ankle in the closing stages against City.

Early Man Utd team news

10:13 , Alex Young

Manchester United remain without three players, with Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount are all sidelined through injury.

Mount had been expected to return in time for the fixture against Tottenham after he injured himself in training last week, but interim manager Michael Carrick described him as “not too far away” in Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

Senne Lammens remains United’s first-choice goalkeeper and the back four will likely remain intact, despite Harry Maguire conceding a late penalty last week which set up a frantic finish.

Casemiro, who headed home Bruno Fernandes’ corner for the opener against Fulham, will likely pair up with the Carrick-preferred Kobbie Mainoo in the centre of midfield.

Elsewhere, skipper Fernandes continues to be United’s talisman, having registered more assists than any other Premier League player so far this season, and will be supported on his right by Amad Diallo.

Matheus Cunha will most likely deputise for Dorgu again, having proven himself to be a valuable option on the left flank after scoring in successive games.

With Benjamin Sesko coming off the bench and scoring the last-minute winner against Fulham, the Slovenian could find himself bumped up the attacking pecking order.

However, Bryan Mbeumo feels nailed on to start again, despite a goalless performance against the Cottagers.
