Manchester United vs Newcastle Carabao Cup final Wembley rule change confirmed

Hundreds of Manchester United and Newcastle United supporters attending the Carabao Cup final later this month will be the first fans permitted to stand at a major domestic men's final in the country for almost 35 years.

The English Football League (EFL) have confirmed the news on Thursday after United confirmed their place at Wembley after advancing 5-0 on aggregate against Nottingham Forest following a 2-0 second leg win at Old Trafford. Newcastle reached their first final in 24 years a day earlier in the week by beating Southampton 3-1 on aggregate.

Standing in seated areas has been permitted since the start of this season, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League providing sections for home and away supporters so far. Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers have also done similar in the Championship.

At Wembley for the final on February 26, the EFL has confirmed that each club will receive identical allocations of 867 seats for their fans. These spots are situated behind both goals in the east and west stands in newly designated standing areas of the stadium.

Allocated spaces where supporters are allowed to stand during matches feature a barrier or rail preventing people from falling forward. The EFL reiterates that fans situated anywhere else inside the stadium must remain seated.

Applications for tickets from United fans open at 8am on Friday, February 3 for executive club members, wheelchair users with season tickets and full season ticket holders who have bought tickets to all other home cup fixtures this season. This window for applications is set to remain open for five days through to 8am next Wednesday before the ballot is then processed over the weekend, with results being communicated by email before 5pm the following Monday, February 13.

Within the same statement, a kick-off time of 4:30pm has been confirmed by the EFL. This is the same time as six years ago when United last reached the final and won the competition by beating Southampton 3-2 thanks to a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Wembley while Jose Mourinho was the club's manager.
