Match report: Manchester United 3-1 West Ham

FA Cup fifth round: Said Benrahma’s opener was cancelled out by a Nayef Aguerd own goal, before Alejandro Garnacho and Fred put West Ham to the sword with two late strikes. Jamie Jackson reports from Old Trafford …

Meanwhile in the Premier League ...

Arsenal have thrashed Everton 4-0 at the Emirates, while Liverpool have won 2-0 against Wolves at Anfield.

Tonight's FA Cup results

Tottenham Hotspur join Southampton in making an undignified exit at the hands of opposition from outside the Premier League, losing to a severely weakened Sheffield United line-up. Burnley also advance at the expense of Fleetwood Town.

  • Southampton 1-2 Grimsby Town

  • Burnley 1-0 Fleetwood Town

  • Sheffield United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Manchester United 3-1 West Ham

That Fred goal: I think it was Lucas Paqueta who misfielded a ball scooped his way from the corner flag with a woeful first touch. As he tried to recover, Wout Weghorst beat him to the loose ball and teed up Fred, who slotted home.

Full time: Manchester United 3-1 West Ham

Peep! Peep! Peep! Manchester United advance to the quarter-finals but had to come from behind to do it. The scoreline flatters them as they relied upon two late, late goals to win this tie but they were more than worthy winners on the balance of second half play.

GOAL! Manchester United 3-1 West Ham (Fred 90+5)

M<anchester United stretch their lead. Fred stabs home from eight or nine yards out after the ball broke his way following a mix-up at the back from West Ham.

90+4 min: Manchester United substitution: Raphael Varane replaces Alejandro Garnacho, who dawdles off to warm applause from the Old Trafford stands.

90+2 min: We’re well into four minutes of added time with West Ham chasing an equaliser but it’s Manchester United who go close, with Marcus Rashford caressing the outside of the far post with a low diagonal effort.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 West Ham (Garnacho 90)

Manchester United go ahead!!! Following a period of sustained pressure by Manchester United, Alejandro Garnacho controls a ricochet, gets the ball out from under his feet and from the left side of the West Ham penlaty area, curls a wonderful effort around the outstretched arm of Alphonse Areola and inside the far post.

89 min: Tyrell Malacia overhits a cross from the left flank as Manchester United continue to press for a winner.

88 min: Fred is on for Manchester United, replacing Marcel Sabitzer. For West Ham, Gianluca Scamacca replaces Michail Antonio.

85 min: With a game against Liverpool at Anfield looming on the horizon, Manchester United are throwing the kitchen sink at West Ham. They don’t want extra-time.

84 min: Sabitzer wins a corner for Manchester United, the ball going out of play off Aguerd. Bruno Fernandes’s latest delivery is hacked clear.

83 min: Bruno Fernandes sends a free-kick from deep towards the far post, where Casemiro connects again. His effort goes straight into the bread-basket of Areola.

81 min: Alejandro Garnacho goes to ground in the West Ham penalty area as he cuts in from the left, apparently shovedd by Ben Johnson. Garnacho, his teammates, Erik ten Hag and Manchester United’s fans appeal for a penalty but the ref is having none of it and neither are his colleagues in the VAR room.

80 min: Manchester United win two more corners in quick succession, with Bruno Fernandes sending the ball into the mixer on both occasions. Ben Johnson heads the second one clear from the near post.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 West Ham (Aguerd 77og)

Manchester United equalise! At a Manchester United corner, Nayef Aguerd leaps like the proverbial salmon and unwittingly heads the ball into his own net. Oh Nayef.

76 min: West Ham sunbstitution: Jarrod Bowen is on for Pablo Fornals.

75 min: Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Grimsby Town have knocked out Southampton and advance to the quarter-finals on the back of a 2-1 win at Saint Mary’s. Congratulations to them.

VAR: Manchester United's "equaliser" is ruled out

73 min: Silence descends on Old Trafford as the curtain-twitchers in Stockley Park get their set squares and rulers out. Offside! West Ham still lead.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 West Ham (Casemiro 72)

72 min: Ben Johnson fouls Garnacho and United win a free-kick wide on the left. Fernando’s delivery to the far post is pin-point and Casemiro repeats his heroics of Sunday by heading home from close range. There’ll be a VAR check and I think he was offside.

70 min: Bruno Fernandes unleashes a volley from the edge of the West Ham penalty area, pouncing on a poor headed clearance. High and wide.

67 min: Lisandro Martinez needlessly bundles Michail Antonio to the ground by the corner flag and West Ham win a free-kick in a dangerous position. Emerson’s delivery is half-cleared but West Ham win a throw-in deep in United territory.

66 min: That Benrahma goal has put the cat among the pigeons and really livened up this Cup tie. Manchester United have no option but to chase the game and are leaving openings at the back for West Ham to exploit.

65 min: Casemiro shoots low and hard from outside the West Ham penalty area but has his effort saved comfortably by Alphonse Areola.

62 min: Michail Anotnio takes on and beats Lisandro Martinez down the inside left, canters forweard and shoots at David De Gea from a narrow angle when he had two an option to his right in Said Benrahma. David De Gea gets a strong left arm to Antonio’s shot and appears to injure his elbow in the process.

60 min: Manchester United double-substitution from a couple of minutes ago: Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez on for Antony and Victor Lindelof.

59 min: In a crowded Manchester United penalty area, Pablo Fornals sends a cross-shot wide of the far post.

57 min: There seems to be some question over whether or not the VAR officials were afforded a perfectly clear view of that ball Soucek may or may not have prevented from going out for a throw-in. If they didn’t have one, the referee has to let the goal stand and it’s no more than West Ham deserve. Manchester United have been very poor going by their own recent high standards.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 West Ham (Benrahma 54)

West Ham lead! Tomas Soucek does well to keep the ball in play out by the left touchline. Thinking it’s gone out for a throw-in, Manchester United’s players stop playing. Soucek doesn’t and plays the ball inside to Berahma, who advances and fires a diagonal effort past David De Gea into the top corner. After a VAR check, the goal stands!

53 min: Sabitzer dinks a ball over the top, trying to pick out Fernandes on the edge of the six-yard box. Under pressure from Nayef Aguerd, Fernandes swings a foot at the dropping ball but is unabvle to make contact.

51 min: Already a big influence on the game, Casemiro plays a ball through to the centre to the feet of Wout Weghorst in the West Ham penalty area. The Dutchman’s first touch lets him down and takes away from goal and a good chance goes to waste.

49 min: Casemiro pings the ball towards the corner flag for Fredc to chase. It’s put out for a corner by Emerson. United take it short, Fernandes sends a cross into the penalty area and West Ham clear, albeit unconvincingly. The ball breaks to Sabitzer, whose shot doesn’t trouble Areola unduly.

48 min: Southampton have pulled a goal back against Grimsby Town but it’s still 2-1 to the Haddock-wielding minnows at St Mary’s.

46 min: Bruno completely overhits a cross from the right, blasting the ball high and wide of the West Ham goal.

Second half: Manchester United 0-0 West Ham

46 min: Play resumes with Casemiro on for Scott McTominay in a bid to try to energise Manchester United after a fairly flat and insipid first half performance.

Elswhere in the FA Cup: The lowest ranked team left in the competition, League Two side Grimsby Town have brought 4,000 fans to Soutampton, where they lead 2-0. It’s scoreless in tonight’s other two ties between Burnley and Fleetwood Town, and Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur.

In the Premier League, Arsenal lead Everton 2-0 at the Emirates, while it’s currently 0-0 between Wolves and Liverpool at Molineux. Scott Murray has the latest on all those games …

Half-time: Manchester United 0-0 West Ham

Peep! Michael Salisbury draws the first half to a close. Manchester United dominated and went close through a long range effort from Marcel Sabitzer. West Ham have had two good chances of their own. Michail Antonio missed the pick of them, messing up a one-on-one against David De Gea, while Pablo Fornals might also have scored with a tap-in had he shown more of a striker’s instinct to pre-empt a cross from Said Benrahma.

44 min: Referee Michael Salisbury accidentally gets in the way of a West Ham attack, prompting an uncontested drop ball for the visitors and a protest from Tomas Soucek, who doesn’t appear to know this particular law. We’ll have one minute of added time at the end of this first half.

40 min: Antony squares the ball across the face of the West Ham penalty area, Bruno Fernandes dummies, letting it run between his legs and Alejandro Garnacho shoots high over the bar before looking at the spot of turf beneath his feet in an accusatory fashion.

39 min: Antony fouls Emerson just inside the Manchester United half and is lucky to avoid a yellow card for the kind of foul that is known in Premier League circles as a “Fernandinho”.

37 min: A hopeful punt forward from Paqueta towards Antonio is dealt with, in a manner of speaking, by David De Gea. The United goalkeeper gives the ball away to Fornals but West Ham are unable to capitalise on his error.

35 min: West Ham attack on the break, with Declan Rice playing the ball wide. Up on the overlap, Said Benrahma sends a low, diagonal cross fizzing towards the far post, but Pablo Fornals stands watching it roll wide after failing to anticipate the delivery. He had a tap-in if only he’d bothered to sprint a couple of yards. Lazy Pablo.

32 min: A reasonably entertaining game passes the half-hour mark with the deadlock unbroken and Manchester United in the ascendency, but with West Ham having wasted the best chance so far. Scott McTominay gets booked for a late challenge on Said Benrahma.

29 min: Antony tries to curl a left-footed shot from distance inside the far post but sends his effort high and wide.

28 min: Lucas Paqueta plays a give-and-go with Said Benrahma on the edge of the Manchester United box before unleashing a shot. It’s straight at David De Gea.

26 min: A Bruno Fernandes cross to the far post from the right wing is headed clear by West Ham right-back Ben Johnson.

23 min: Oh dear. Michail Antonio squanders the best scoring opportunity of the game thus far. Played in behind the United defence by Said Benrahma, he trundles forward in a one-on-omne with David De Gea and leaves it too late too shoot. De Gea stands his ground and saves with ease, more or less inviting Antonio to run into him.

22 min: Elsewhere in the FA Cup, League Two side Grimsby are a goal up against Southampton at Saint Mary’s. It might technically be a shock scoreline but it doesnt really come as much of a surprise.

Updated

21 min: Bruno Fernandes squares the ball into the West Ham penalty area from the right but his delivery is poor and fizzes a couple of feet behind Antony.

20 min: Manchester United continue to dominate, albeit without troubling the scoreboard operator. They’ve had two decent shots on goal saved by Alphonse Areola, while West Ham have yet to trouble David De Gea.

16 min: Scott McTominay is penalised for a foul on Paqueta, who was robbed by the midfielder near the centre-circle and promptly flung himself to the ground theatrically. There was no foul and United had a five-on-three – West Ham might have dodged a hail of bullets there.

14 min: Michail Antonio sends a cross into the Manchester United penalty area from the right. Tomas Soucek leaps incredibly high, using Harry Maguire’s head and shoulders as a platform on which to balance himself, but is unable to steer his header goalwards.

12 min: Alejandro Garnacho cuts inside from the left and lets fly with a shot on goal. Alphonse Areola dives to his left to parry the low drive clear.

10 min: Ben Johnson takes a throw=in and picks out Michail Antonio near the byline. He does well to turn Tyrell Malacia and blasts the ball through the Manchester United penalty area. There’s nobody in a shirt boasting a graphic sparks front with eyelet back body to help ventilate, interlock sleeves for close fit, stylized V neckline with rib collar, dropped back hem with twin needle finish, club back neck sign off, raglan sleeve, woven licensed label at side seam, diamond embroidery and woven applique club crest to get near it.

8 min: West Ham win a free-kick wide on the left, not too far inside the Manchester United half. Emerson Palmieri’s ball towards Tomas Soucek on the edge of the penalty area is headed clear.

7 min: Alphonse Areola gets down to his right to save a Marcel Sabitzer daisy-cutter from distance that went through the legs of Nayef Aguerd. Good goalkeeping.

6 min: Wout Weghorst plays the ball out wide to Alejandro Garnacho on the left flank but there’s nobody on hand to meet the Spaniard’s cross into the West Ham penalty area.

4 min: Manchester United advance into the West Ham half but lose possession again. Michail Antonio takes on Harry Maguire down the inside left but is unable to get past the United skipper.

3 min: Manchester United dominate possession in these very early stages, their players passing the ball hither and yon inside their own half. Antony gives it away to Said Benrahma, who runs the ball out of play for a goal-kick.

1 min: Ben Johnson takes an early throw-in for West Ham, halfway inside the Manchester United half. Manchester United clear their lines with Marcel Sabitzer on the ball.

Manchester United v West Ham is go ...

1 min: Following a minute’s applause for the late commentator John Motson, West Ham get the ball rolling with Lucas Paqueta doing the honours.

West Ham’s kit: They’re in their third kit tonight, which is – minute-by-minute reporter checks notes – “inspired by the industrial ironworks and its heritage”.

Yes, that’s all well and good but what does it feature? Well, according to the official Umbro blurb, it boasts “a graphic sparks front with eyelet back body to help ventilate, interlock sleeves for close fit, stylized V neckline with rib collar, dropped back hem with twin needle finish, club back neck sign off, raglan sleeve, woven licensed label at side seam, diamond embroidery and woven applique club crest.”

In summary, it’s orange and white.

Not long now. It’s tipping down with rain at Old Trafford, as the players of both sides make their way out on to the pitch and line up either side of Michael Salisbury and his team of match officials before the last of the pre-match formalities. Harry Maguire leads out Manchester United, while Declan Rice wears the captain’s armband for West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen: David Moyes has told ITV that Bowen is on the bench because he has “a bit of an injury”. It’s good news for West Ham fans because it’s not an entire injury, just a bit of one.

Those teams: Erik ten Hag makes six changes to the Manchester United side that started in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof come into the heart of the defence, while Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez are all on the bench.

West Ham make four changes, three of them enforced. Michail Antonio starts in place of Danny Ings, who is cup-tied, while Emerson Palmieiri replaces the injured right-back Vladimir Coufal. Alphonse Areola comes in for Lucasz Fabianski, who is also sidelined. Jarrod Bowen is rested, with Pablo Fornals deputising.

When is the quarter-final draw?

The draw will take place live on BBC One after the conclusion of their live coverage of Sheffield United’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, which kjicks off at 19.55pm (GMT). In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, tonight’s fifth round ties will go to extra-time, followed by penalties, if required. All tonight’s ties must be settled on the night.

Erik Ten Hag: ““Of course, yesterday [Monday], the players were still enthusiastic and they had to celebrate this momentum,” said Ten Hag of his team’s Carabao Cup win. “But, yesterday, after we settled down, we get back to work. What we had to do was recovery and the ones who played less did a good training session.”

David Moyes: “I would love to win a cup final if we could get there,” the West Ham manager told the club website in the build-up to tonight’s game. “We had a great run at Everton and got to the final one year and beat in the semi-final one year. I would love to be able to take West Ham into a similar position.

“Old Trafford is a really difficult game. I think we have drawn them in three of the last four years away from home in the cup competitions but that is what it is. You have to play the top teams as part of the journey. We have been away to Brentford and Derby County [in the FA Cup already], so our draws in this competition have been really difficult because they have all been away from home.”

Early team news

Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Christian Eriksen all remain sidelined and in the United treatment room, while Fred and Luke Shaw are in doubt following the Carabao Cup final and are due to undergo late fitness tests. They may not be risked tonight ahead of United’s visit to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Maxwel Cornet is still out with a calf injury, while in-form January signing Danny Ings can’t play tonight as he’s Cup-tied after representing Aston Villa in the competition earlier this season. Kurt Zouma is back in training after a spell on the sidelines but is not fit enough to play. Full-back Vladimir Coufal has been ruled out with a heel injury, while goalkeeper Lucasz Fabianski won’t feature after suffering a fractured cheekbone and eyesocket during West Ham’s win over Forest.

FA Cup fifth round: Manchester United v West Ham

With the Carabao Cup in the bag following their win over Newcastle at Wembley on Sunday, Manchester United host West Ham with a quarter-final spot in the FA Cup up for grabs.

The odds are stacked against the visitors, who are battling against the drop from the Premier League and have won on just one of their 20 most recent visits to Old Trafford. Following their 4-0 demolition of Nottingham Forest at the weekend, however, they will arrive in Manchester full of confidence.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 7.45pm (GMT) but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
