Manchester United using performance psychologist Rainier Koers in training sessions

Manchester United have hired performance psychologist Rainier Koers to observe their training sessions.

Dutchman Koers was among the staff present for their training camp in Cadiz earlier this month after he was recommended by manager Erik ten Hag. Club sources say Koers, of the Talent Academy, comes into training "a couple of days a week".

Koers describes himself as a life coach who "guides people who get stuck in their lives due to major events".

On his website, Koers says: "I help you get to your feeling. We start with becoming aware and being aware. Together we look at what you do and why you do it. Recognise behaviour, explore patterns and, if necessary, break through and change."

United interim manager Ralf Rangnick added sports psychologist Sascha Lense to his staff last season but the club have never appointed one on a permanent basis. Lense left at the end of last season with Rangnick.

Steve McClaren, one of Ten Hag's assistants, suggested sports psychologist Bill Beswick to Sir Alex Ferguson when he replaced Brian Kidd as assistant manager in 1999. Roy Keane and Gary Neville both spoke glowingly about Beswick's methods.

United staff also met with staff from the Tour de France winners Team Jumbo-Visma to discuss nutrition and sleeping patterns. Ten Hag is an enthusiastic cyclist and biked to watch a United Under-21 friendly at Altrincham in September.
