Manchester United star's Barcelona display earns seal of approval from striker duo

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia earned plenty of praise for his performance in the 2-2 draw at Barcelona.

The young Dutchman was dropped in at left back for the Europa League play-off first leg, following Erik ten Hag's decision to have Luke Shaw replace the suspended Lisandro Martinez at centre back. Marcus Rashford's clinical finish and an own goal from Jules Kounde saw the Reds lead at Camp Nou before Raphinha's cross crept in to restore parity.

Malacia was handed the unenviable task of keeping an electric Raphinha at bay and held his own under tough circumstances. It was another impressive showing from the 23-year-old who won more tackles than anyone else on the pitch as he continues to find his feet in United red.

After the game he posted a picture on Instagram alongside the caption: "All to play for at home."

United teammate Anthony Martial, who is currently sidelined through injury, commented: "My bro", while former Reds striker and fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie sent four fire emojis.

Despite another strong performance from the £13million man, he could be back on the bench for the return leg next Thursday with Martinez available again. The Argentinian served his one-game ban alongside Marcel Sabitzer for the trip to Camp Nou, with both back in contention for the return.

Erik ten Hag's side fly back to the UK with the advantage of a home leg to come, but the United boss admitted after the game he was disappointed not to have come away in the lead, especially after going 2-1 up.

"If you face the number one in Spain in an away game and you are that dominant, you see that as a positive," the United boss said.

"Yes, we should have won this game, we have steps to go but when two good teams highest level, everyone agrees it was a really high-performance level from both teams and I said to my team I'm really happy with our performance against this strong team."
