Manchester United stance on Marcel Sabitzer after loan officially ends

Manchester United will keep their options open with Marcel Sabitzer after his loan move officially ended but a permanent deal remains unlikely.

Sabitzer and fellow loanee, Wout Weghorst had their profiles removed from the United website overnight as they are no longer contracted to the club.

United have decided against explicit farewells to both players to allow for the remote possibility of a permanent move but sources admit it is unlikely either will return.

Sabitzer missed the last five games of the season with a knee injury and the Manchester Evening News wrote in May United do not plan to buy Weghorst after he scored two goals in 31 appearances.

United intend to sign a new centre forward and Weghorst started 19 successive matches as Anthony Martial was unavailable through injury.

Sabitzer, 29, struck three goals in 18 appearances following his deadline day switch from Bayern Munich. Weghorst, who has returned to Burnley, started in the League Cup final victory over Newcastle and Sabitzer came on in the second half at Wembley.

Weghorst and Sabitzer also scored in the FA Cup semi-final shootout win against Brighton at the national stadium.

United are on the brink of signing attacking midfielder Mason Mount in a £60million deal from Chelsea but are prepared to sell Fred amid interest from Fulham.

There is also uncertainty over the future of Donny van de Beek after he endured another listless season that ended prematurely with a knee injury in January.
