Manchester United ‘should have broken transfer record’ to sign Erling Haaland, claims Dwight Yorke

Manchester United “should have broken the transfer record” to sign Erling Haaland in the summer.

That’s according to Dwight Yorke, who believes his former club are lacking a goalscorer up front and have lived to regret not making a big-money move for the Premier League’s top goalscorer.

Despite facing some questions about whether he fits into the Manchester City side, Haaland already has 31 goals for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Gary Neville labelling him “superhuman” after his start to life in England.

Haaland’s tally of 25 goals in the League is two more than Heung-min Son and Mohamed Salah registered when sharing the Golden Boot last season.

United are expected to try and sign a forward in the summer, with Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane among those linked, after bringing Wout Weghorst to Old Trafford on loan until the end of the season.

“Manchester United need a striker,” Yorke told OLBG.

“They’ve just brought in Wout Weghorst, he gives us a different dimension but he’s not explosive enough. Weghorst is a Peter Crouch type of player, Manchester United need a striker who will get them 25 goals a season.

“We missed the opportunity to sign Erling Haaland, Manchester United should have broken the transfer record for him.”

It’s been Marcus Rashford stepping up for Erik ten Hag’s side in recent weeks, with the England forward scoring 13 times in 15 matches since the World Cup.

Yorke was full of praise for the 25-year-old, believing he is good enough to be compared to the forwards in United’s 1999 treble-winning side.

“Rashford still has the potential to be that quality of player to play in my treble team,” Yorke said.

“I’ve said for the last two years that he’s the best Manchester United player by a mile. In terms of natural ability, he is top draw.”
