Manchester United send message to Gerard Pique as Barcelona defender prepares for final game

Manchester United have paid tribute to former defender Gerard Pique as he prepares for his final match before retirement.

The Barcelona centre-back announced the shock decision to hang up his boots mid-season. He will say his goodbyes following Saturday's game against Almeria at Camp Nou.

He said: "I've always said that there would not be any other team after Barca. And that's how it will be. Football has given me everything. Barca has given me everything. You, Culers [the fans], have given me everything and now that all that kid's dreams have come true, I want to tell you I have decided that now is the time to bring this journey to its end."

Pique joined United in 2004 and helped them win the Premier League and Champions League. He then returned to Barca in 2008, the club where he was developed as a youngster, and would go on to win almost everything there is to win.

He would help Barca claim eight La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues, whilst he also tasted glory at international level, lifting the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.

A lengthy article on United's website signed off with: "All at United would like to wish Gerard well in his retirement."
