Manchester United's forgotten man "felt like a fraud" in miracle 1999 Champions League win

Jonathan Greening was the lad from Scarborough who ended up with a Champions League winners' medal.

Just don't ask him how he earned it!

Greening was the forgotten man from that miraculous Manchester United win over Bayern Munich back in 1999 - a result that sealed a history-making treble for Sir Alex Ferguson's side that season.

Aged 20 and with just a handful of senior appearances under his belt, he was a surprise inclusion on the bench at the Nou Camp.

It was just over a year since Greening had made the step up from lowly York City and now suddenly he was in a Champions League final. Along with the likes of Phil Neville and Wes Brown, he didn't manage to get onto the pitch on that famous night but he would still end up with a winner's medal.

However he clearly remained embarrassed over picking up the gong, saying years later that he "felt like a fraud".

Greening might not have scaled the heights that his United colleagues did but he still enjoyed a career that most players would be envious of, playing the vast majority of his career in the Premier League and Championship.

As well as working hard, Greening admits United played hard too - even staging a party just days before the Bayern game.

Speaking to Ladbrokes last year, he recalled: "Looking back on those 10 or so days back in 1999 in and around the end of the season, the FA Cup final and, of course, the Champions League, it was just such a crazy period.

"We'd won the league by beating Tottenham on the one weekend, all of us celebrating on the pitch lifting the trophy.

"I was a 20-year-old, playing for the team I supported as a young boy, and I'm celebrating with these players I looked up to for so long - we're all going crazy on the pitch, and then there's the after party - it was just one of the best days ever.

"Winning the FA Cup was such a massive accomplishment for the squad and to be a part of it all was a dream come true - again the parties and the celebrations after that final were unbelievable. I remember thinking 'we can't have a party, we've got the Champions League final on Wednesday!', but everyone was steaming, up all night drinking, celebrating. I couldn't believe it."

Greening only played a handful of times for United after the Bayern win and would go on to represent the likes of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Fulham.

With the latter he reached yet another European final, as the Cottagers reached the Europa League final in 2010. Just like in Barcelona, Greening was again on the bench for the showpiece against Atletico Madrid which was played in Hamburg.

And although the outcome wasn't as favourable as it was on that famous night in 1999 - Fulham lost 2-1 in extra-time - he did at least enjoy some game time as he came off the bench late on. A just reward for 11 years of waiting.
