Manchester United player ratings: Marcus Rashford and Raphael Varane good vs Everton

David de Gea

Must have thought Neal Maupay would play the ball out for a goal kick and was completely unprepared. Denied Seamus Coleman. 5

Diogo Dalot

Not at his optimum on his first start since Portugal's World Cup quarter-final four weeks ago but did little wrong on a steady return. 6

Raphael Varane

A reassuring presence back in defence and showed a nice turn of pace and skill at the opposite end. Reiterated his first-choice status at centre half. 7

Luke Shaw

Not as commanding at centre half as he was against Nottingham Forest and Wolves and United were too open at times. 6

Tyrell Malacia

Did not offer a great deal in the attacking third and not wholly convincing in defence but halted an Alex Iwobi breakaway that unfortunately injured the Nigerian. 5

Casemiro

A night where he played the percentages, committing the odd cynical foul that the referee somehow never punished him for. 6

Christian Eriksen

United did not utilise him enough in the first half when he went close with a whipped strike. One of the most prudent in possession. 6

Antony

The forward reluctant to use his right foot somehow scored with it. Plumped for some showboating but his effectiveness was minimal after the goal. 6

Bruno Fernandes

His major contribution in the first half was to get booked. Drew a save from Jordan Pickford in the second. 6

Marcus Rashford

Broke down the left to tee up Antony to make it 1-0 and his cross was inadvertently turned in by Conor Coady. His doggedness decided the tie. 8

Anthony Martial

Retained the ball to spark the breakaway United scored from but squandered a one-on-one with Pickford. Substituted for the seventh game running. 5

Subs

Alejandro Garnacho

Won a penalty late on. 6

Fred

Brought energy to the midfield. 6

Lisandro Martinez

Helped United hold on. 7

Scott McTominay

Steady. 6

Harry Maguire

Got a run out. 6

Manager

Selected a team that was almost at full strength. Shaw at centre half was not as effective as in recent games but Rashford's regularity on the left was. 7
