Manchester United player ratings as David de Gea and Lisandro Martinez awful in Brentford humiliation

David de Gea

Culpable for maybe four of the six goals he has let in this season, A 'keeper who has not adapted and is being exposed under new management. 1

Diogo Dalot

Powerless against Brentford's power players and overhit too many crosses. Did find Cristiano Ronaldo a couple of times but it was 4-0 by then. 2

Harry Maguire

No leadership and no clue. Showed next to no alertness amid United's intentions to play out from their own third and possibly only stayed on as he is taller than Lisandro Martinez. 1

Lisandro Martinez

The doubters now appear to include Erik ten Hag, who hooked Martinez at half-time after he was given a going over by Brentford's power players. 0

Luke Shaw

Should not have started and does not appear remotely aligned with Ten Hag's approach. His attempt to keep up with Bryan Mbeumo was a disgrace. Removed at half-time. 0

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen is a playmaker, a midfielder and sometimes a winger. He is not a defensive midfielder and he was overwhelmed by former teammates. Also seemed unnerved by the crowd's booing. 1

Fred

One of Scott McTominay and Fred had to be sacrificed and Fred was worse without McTominay, albeit paired in an unworkable midfield. Substituted at the pause. 0

Jadon Sancho

Evidence of how misleading and meaningless pre-season is. He was more anonymous than against Brighton and made way for Anthony Elanga. 1

Bruno Fernandes

Skied a presentable chance at 1-0 and appears out of kilter from what Ten Hag wants from a No.10. Still dreadful four months on from his unnecessary salary hike. 1

Marcus Rashford

Ten Hag said he 'loves' Rashford but there is currently little to love on matchday. Mentally, Rashford looks shot and he is too easy to defend against. 1

Cristiano Ronaldo

He was truly trying to put some respect on the scoreline and spurned a few good chances in the second-half. 3

Subs

Tyrell Malacia

An upgrade on Shaw. 5

Raphael Varane

United's best defender on the day. 5

Scott McTominay

Booked. 4

Anthony Elanga

Had no impact. 4

Donny van de Beek

Late arrival. N/A

Manager

Managing as though he is still at Ajax, insistent on getting by without a defensive midfielder. Does not have the players to buy into his methods. 2
