David de Gea
Emerged from his area successfully in the first-half and made three big saves in the second until he was lucklessly beaten by Mohamed Salah. 7
Diogo Dalot
Much more secure against Luis Diaz than in pre-season and was aggressive with his tackling. Limited the Colombian's attacking capacity. 8
Raphael Varane
Perverse he was ever a substitute defender when he is the best centre-back at the club. It showed. Varane led an otherwise young backline masterfully. 9

Lisandro Martinez
Imposed himself from minute one against Mohamed Salah and did likewise against James Milner. Saved a certain own goal by Bruno Fernandes. 9
Tyrell Malacia
An encouraging full debut, overcoming the occasional bout of nerves and having the confidence to take set-pieces. Defended stoutly. 8
Scott McTominay
A gradual improvement on the Brighton debacle, he was disciplined as the defensive midfielder and got stuck in. 6
Christian Eriksen
Showed tremendous composure to salvage the attack that led to Jadon Sancho's opening goal. Reliable on the ball. 7
Bruno Fernandes
Played more effective passes in the first 10 minutes than he had in the whole year. Started to regress a bit and booked for diving. 6
Anthony Elanga
Squandered an easy chance with the game goalless but atoned to pick out Sancho. Came off at half-time and the change was not enforced. 6
Marcus Rashford
At the tip of the arrow but blunt when played in for a couple of opportunities in the first-half. He made no mistake when one-on-one in the second. 7
Jadon Sancho
Made his goal look remarkably easy to lift the roof to give United a deserved lead. Not a constant thorn but had the biggest impact. 7
Subs
Anthony Martial
An enhancement on Elanga, he played Rashford through to make it 2-0. 8
Fred
Provided extra tenacity in midfield. 6
Cristiano Ronaldo
Skied a volley. 5
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
First appearance of season. 5
Donny van de Beek
Late arrival. 6
Manager
Made key decisions and they all benefited United. Targeting Trent Alexander-Arnold worked and so did introducing Martial at the pause. 8
