Manchester United play down Anthony Martial training incident with teammate

Manchester United's Anthony Martial was involved in a training ground disagreement at Carrington last week. Martial has not made France's squad for the World Cup and he's remained in Manchester to train with the players left behind.

The Manchester Evening News understands Martial was tackled in training last week by 18-year-old Daniel Gore and the pair were involved in a minor squabble, but that both players quickly made up and the incident has been played down.

It's also understood that tackling first-team players with Erik ten Hag in charge is actually permitted in training, contrary to reports.

Sources have indicated it was a minor disagreement and that such incidents are more common in a competitive training environment than some may believe, with the pressure of playing for an elite club conducive to high training standards.

Ten Hag has promoted youngsters to first-team training in the absence of key players who have gone to the World Cup and midfielder Gore, who played an important role in last season's Under-18s FA Youth Cup triumph, is well regarded in the academy.

Karim Benzema was a late withdrawal from the France squad at the weekend but Martial was not called up as a replacement.
