Manchester United manager target Erik ten Hag suffers Dutch Cup final heartbreak as PSV beat Ajax

Manchester United managerial target Erik ten Hag suffered Dutch Cup final heartbreak on Sunday as PSV Eindhoven came from behind to beat Ajax.

Two goals in as many second-half minutes, from Erick Gutierrez and Cody Gakpo, cancelled out Ryan Gravenberch's opener. PSV had earlier had an effort ruled out by VAR.

Ten Hag and Ajax were aiming to win a third Dutch Cup on the trot but instead had to watch as PSV celebrated their first in a decade. Ajax lead PSV by four points in the Eredivisie title race with five games still to play.

United are growing increasingly confident of naming Ten Hag as their next permanent manager, five months after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked. Manchester Evening News understands that a deal to bring the Dutchman to Old Trafford is 'basically done'.

Ahead of the game, Gerry Hamstra, recently appointed as technical manager for the Eredivisie giants, said the club had done "everything they can" to convince Ten Hag to stay. Ajax have now seemingly admitted defeat in their efforts.
