Manchester United make decisions on two youngsters as contract extension triggered

Manchester United have made decisions on two youngsters as things begin to take shape ahead of next season.

The Manchester Evening News understands that goalkeeper Nathan Bishop has signed a new one-year deal after the club triggered an option for an additional year.

Bishop was out of contract this summer, but the club opted to exercise the clause in his deal. The 23-year-old joined United from Southend United in January 2020 and spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Mansfield, where he made 53 appearances across all competitions.

United opted against sending him out on loan last season, and he was named on the bench four times in the Premier League but has yet to make his senior debut for the club.

He played nine times for the Under-21s, including four appearances in the Papa Johns Trophy, captaining the side in their 4-0 defeat by Bolton Wanderers.

Bishop could potentially leave on loan if the right offer comes in, but with uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper situation, it seems most likely he will remain at the club again.

It is also understood that United have agreed to send defender Will Fish out on loan for another season, with a return to Hibernian the most likely.

The 20-year-old spent the past season playing for the Edinburgh side, where he established himself as a regular in the starting line-up under manager Lee Johnson.

Fish had been attracting interest from clubs in the Championship and League One, as well as rival clubs in Scotland, including Aberdeen.

United are happy with the progress the academy graduate has made during his spell in Scotland and believe the club can be trusted to oversee the next stage of his development as well.
