Manchester United legend Roy Keane is remaining tight-lipped on his links to the Sunderland manager’s job, although has reiterated his desire to return to management.
The former United captain is the favourite to take over at the Stadium of Light following Lee Johnson’s sacking earlier this week.
Reports have suggested Keane has spoken to Sunderland over the vacancy, with the former midfielder being offered the chance to return to the club where he began his management career.
Keane was previously in charge of the Black Cats for two years, guiding them to promotion back to the Premier League before leaving the club in 2008.
He has been out of management since working as Martin O’Neill’s assistant at Nottingham Forest in 2019, but has been vocal about his desire to return to it.
But, when asked about the Sunderland job while working as a pundit on ITV, Keane was in no mood to give anything away.
“I’ve got no control over that, so no comment,” Keane said.
The former United skipper though did reiterate his desire to return to management, saying: “I’ve made that clear over the last few years I’d like to go back into as a manager but of course a club has to want you, you have to want that club and just as important the contract has got to be right so we see how things take shapes over the next few days.”
Reports in the north-east have suggested Keane was interviewed for the Sunderland job earlier today, with the club hoping to have an appointment wrapped up by the end of the weekend.
