Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand gives Darwin Nunez verdict after Liverpool FC move

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict on new Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguay international completed his move from Benfica to Anfield earlier this week, in a deal believed to be worth roughly £85million with add-ons. Nunez arrives following a superb season in Portugal, with the youngster bagging 34 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

The 22-year-old was linked with a move to United before eventually deciding to head to Merseyside. Despite United being in the market for a new forward, they were reluctant to get drawn into a bidding war with Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Ferdinand believes Jurgen Klopp’s side have a “top signing” on their hands. The former United defender referenced Virgil van Dijk as he gave his opinion of Nunez on Twitter.

“Watched a lot of this guy in the #UCL last season…. VVD gave a glowing reference in a recent interview. Looks like a top signing for @LFC unfortunately,” Ferdinand tweeted.

Van Dijk spoke to Ferdinand before Liverpool’s Champions League final last month. During the interview, the Netherlands international compared Nunez to new Manchester City signing Erling Haaland, who has been tipped to take the Premier League by storm next season.

"The name of Haaland, and also Darwin, he’s a bit similar, very direct, quick, tall, strong, and it's quite difficult to play against those guys,” Van Dijk told BT Sport and Five.

While Liverpool and City have made their first big signings of the summer, United are still waiting to welcome any new additions. The club’s supporters will be hoping they’re not left to rue Ferdinand’s prediction next season.
