Paul Scholes believes Luke Shaw is “slightly ahead” of Tyrell Malacia in the contest for the left-back position in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side.
Malacia was Ten Hag’s first signing as Reds boss and has started nine games including Thursday’s Europa League clash with Omonia. He was replaced at half-time in last week’s tie against the Cypriots and also in the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City after abject displays.
He sat out Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton, the first time he has been dropped since starting the 4-0 game to Brentford on the bench.

After a shaky start under Ten Hag, which included a foot injury, Shaw found redemption with England, starting and scoring in the 3-3 draw with Germany after featuring against Italy for the Three Lions.
And as a result of Shaw's uptick in form, United fans are debating which full-back should start for Ten Hag. Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes weighed in on the debate.
He said: “It’s very difficult to say with this manager and what he’s thinking [whether Shaw will start this weekend]. Luke Shaw, when he’s fit, is one of the best left-backs around, he did really well when he came on and again on Sunday.
“Malacia has done well for a young kid coming over into a new league, he’s adapted well but if you’re choosing between [the two], Luke Shaw is just slightly ahead.”
