Paul Scholes believes Christian Eriksen should have done more to stop Bukayo Saka’s long-range strike in Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.
The England star shifted past the Dane before launching the strike past David de Gea from 25 yards to put the hosts 2-1 up early in the second half. Eriksen had been jockeying Saka, keeping his distance to prevent a quick take-on.
But in doing so, he allowed his opponent to create space to his right and fire an arrowed effort into the bottom corner. Scholes was critical of the United midfielder and suggested he should have done more to stop the shot.

In the process, he praised Luke Shaw, who had to deal with a sparkling Saka for 90 minutes. Speaking to Premier League Productions, Scholes said: “At the time, I think the goal went in a little bit easy, but it’s a hell of a strike
“I think it’s Christian Eriksen that has to do better. Letting Saka come in on his left-hand side. That’s why I thought Luke Shaw handled [Saka] quite well. Always showing him down the right-hand side. But that one mistake, one little error and it is a goal.”
Arsenal hero Ian Wright agreed with Scholes that Eriksen made an error which allowed Saka to get his shot off. He added: “Eriksen... you can’t let [Saka] come inside. You’ve got to get your body in his way.”
Speaking after the game, Erik ten Hag was not afraid to criticise his players for the loss despite a valiant showing for the majority of the contest.
“Maybe in the next couple of hours we realise we are in a good position, realise we are in a good development, a good process, but at this moment I am annoyed," the United boss said. "I also told the players if you want to win trophies, titles, we have to change our mentality.”
