Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson wanted by Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson this summer. Henderson has been frustrated by a lack of playing time at Old Trafford and is keen to leave the club this summer, with Forest now leading the race for his signature.

The 25-year-old didn't feature in the Premier League at all for United last season and has made his intentions to find first-team football clear. Newcastle United registered an interest in the England international earlier in the summer, but Forest are now pursuing a loan move for Henderson in a deal that could include an option to buy.

Forest won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last month, but there have been reports goalkeeper Brice Samba is refusing to sign a new deal and wants to leave the club, with just a year left on his existing contract.

Henderson split goalkeeping duties with David de Gea in the 2020/21 season and was initially slated to start last season as United's first-choice goalkeeper. But he picked up Covid-19 last summer and struggled to shake off the aftereffects, by which stage De Gea had found form and kept his place throughout the season.

Henderson's only appearances for United last season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham, the FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough and the Champions League dead-rubber with Young Boys. If he does leave the club this summer then Tom Heaton could step up as De Gea's understudy.

Forest's interest in Henderson could have a knock-on effect on their desire to see midfielder James Garner return to the City Ground. Premier League rules state clubs can only have one player on loan from another member club at the same time, but Forest may seek to exploit a loophole that would make both deals an option of Henderson's loan included an option to buy.

United's new boss Erik ten Hag will run the rule over Garner in pre-season before deciding whether to send him out on loan again or keep him in his squad. Forest would be keen on a reunion with the 21-year-old who starred in their promotion campaign from the Championship.
