Manchester United fans suggest Frenkie de Jong alternative amid transfer frustration

An increasing number of Manchester United supporters want the club to bring their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to an end and focus on signing Wolves ace Ruben Neves instead.

United — who face Liverpool in their first pre-season friendly on Tuesday in Bangkok — have been locked in talks with Barcelona for almost two months in a bid to try and bring De Jong to Old Trafford. United, as revealed by the Manchester Evening News almost a fortnight ago, have reached an agreement with the Spanish giants to sign the Netherlands international.

However, Barcelona continue to remain reluctant to allow the former Ajax midfielder to leave the club. President Joan Laporta has reiterated that he is not for sale, but recently accepted that they may be forced into letting go of him because of their ongoing financial struggles.

Laporta said: "Frenkie de Jong is Barcelona player - we don't want to sell him unless we have no other choice. Of course, we know there are offers for de Jong — but we don't want to sell him."

Given United's desperate need for a new central-midfielder, some fans are beginning to grow increasingly impatient. It is an area of the team that the club desperately needs to strengthen this summer and they are yet to make a significant breakthrough.

It is why some supporters are now urging the club to ditch their interest in De Jong, who worked with United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, and focus on trying to sign Neves. The Portugal international has gone from strength-to-strength for Wolves over the past few seasons and has often been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Now, with the De Jong saga threatening to drag on and on, the fans want to see Neves move to the top of United's wish list. Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what the fans have had to say:

As you can see from the messages displayed in the tweets above, there is an increasing feeling of frustration from United's fans — and understandably so. They know the club is in desperate need of a new central-midfielder and the De Jong situation is threatening to drag on for far too long.
