Manchester United fans are getting excited upon the return of Lisandro Martinez after his World Cup success with Argentina. The defender was given extra time off after the final, and subsequently missed the League Cup clash with Burnley last week and Tuesday’s league win over Nottingham Forest.
It’s not yet clear if he will feature against Wolves on New Year’s Eve. Martinez made five appearances in Qatar although did not feature in the final itself. United defensive partner Raphael Varane staggered off with exhaustion for France in extra time as his side tasted defeat.
He returned to United this week and featured in the victory over Forest, helping to keep a clean sheet in the 3-0 win. He could line up next to Martinez once more against Wolves if the Argentine is deemed ready.

United fans have pointed out that once they do play together again, Erik ten Hag will have two World Cup winners in the heart of his defence after Varane’s 2018 success. Ten Hag joked on Friday that Martinez was still “celebrating in Buenos Aires” but had expected him to be back at base soon.
So supporters were delighted to see Martinez report back for club duty on Wednesday. They tweeted their congratulations to the 24-year-old and welcomed him back to Manchester, hailing his exploits.
