Manchester United fans pick best and worst stadiums in England with unsurprising results

Manchester United supporters have picked what they believe to be the best and worst stadiums across England.

Fans were asked which stadiums they liked the most and the least, aside from their own ground. The home stadiums of all 92 Football League clubs were included, as were a few others such as Wembley.

United supporters agreed with the rest of the 7,500 voters regarding which ground they believe is best, while there were split opinions on Anfield. Meanwhile, Old Trafford got a nasty ranking in the overall table. Below are the results of the poll.

Best stadiums

1 - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (35.2%)

Maybe not surprisingly, Tottenham’s brand new stadium has been branded as the best ground in England by United fans. Opened in April 2019, the stadium is state of the art and holds a capacity of 62,850.

2 - Wembley Stadium (25.2%)

The home of football is given its dues by the United faithful, despite not so fond memories from recent years. The club have not played there since their 2020 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea after losing to the Blues in the 2018 final.

But a 2017 League Cup success and a 2016 FA Cup final win will never be forgotten. Their last victory at Wembley came in a 1-0 league win over Tottenham in January 2019 when Spurs temporarily moved to the stadium while their new ground was being built.

3 - Anfield (8.9%)

Considering the rivalry and their recent 4-0 drubbing, Anfield being third may raise a few eyebrows. However, some may argue that it is hard to ignore the historic venue given the atmosphere over the years and recent capacity extensions.

Worst stadiums

1 - Anfield (20.5%)

But for many others, the recent upgrades have done little to sway their opinion of Liverpool’s home ground. The archaic feel of the stadium is seemingly not to the taste of many fans.

2 - Etihad Stadium (10.2%)

Prior to March’s 4-1 defeat, the Etihad had been a rather happy hunting ground for United. They had lost just once at the stadium since 2014, but that is not to say supporters were fond of the ground.

3 - Stamford Bridge (5.6%)

Many have called on Chelsea to either expand or move from their 41,000 capacity ground. The likes of Sunderland’s Stadium of Light and Villa Park hold more people and it is often criticised by visitors for having a rather cramped feel on a matchday.

When all of the polls are combined, 22.4 per cent said the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was the best stadium in the land, followed by Wembley (16.2 per cent) and Anfield (11.3 per cent). Damningly, Old Trafford was named the worst ground by supporters across England.

Plans to update and modernise Old Trafford are in the pipeline but in its present state, supporters of other clubs do not think much of it. Following Old Trafford’s 12.5 per cent share is Anfield with 9.7 per cent. Everton’s Goodison Park props up the top three with 6.9 per cent of the votes.
