Manchester United fans have theory about Frenkie de Jong transfer amid Chelsea hijack reports

Manchester United fans are unconvinced that Chelsea could make a late charge for Frenkie de Jong, despite reports suggesting the London club is keeping a close eye on negotiations between United and Barcelona.

The Manchester Evening News understands United have agreed a deal in principle for the midfielder albeit are yet to get a final deal over the line. De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s top transfer target with the Dutch coach keen to restock United’s midfield.

However, a report from the Guardian claims Chelsea are waiting in the wings should a deal break down. The Blues are poised to welcome Raheem Sterling into the fold with Raphinha of Leeds also on their radar.

New owner Tedd Boehly is eager to make an impression in his first summer transfer window so could make a swoop for De Jong and lure him to Stamford Bridge with the offer of Champions League football. Thomas Tuchel is said to admire the midfielder.

However, United fans believe this is just a smokescreen. Many on Twitter believe Chelsea’s interest is being used to speed along the transfer process and tie up a reunion with Ten Hag.

@ManUnitedYouth: Could just be a story to hurry things along a bit.

@Ae_Gon: PR stunt to pressure us.

@CD_200223: All this is just to hurry up the deal. It's dragged on long enough.

@Yomade26: Even if deal falls apart, he’s staying at Barcelona and not moving elsewhere. He’s only considering United coz of our Dutch connections and Ten Hag, even before the money. Chelsea have zero chance.

@Ndfrek: This is Barcelona telling United to hurry up and stop haggling over £5m.

@hdhadwalmufc: A tactic to speed the deal up, we will get it done.
