Manchester United end unwanted record and other moments missed in Everton win

Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory away at Everton on Sunday.

Alex Iwobi gave the hosts an early lead at Goodison Park as he curled a fine strike beyond the reach of David de Gea. United responded just 10 minutes later, though, as Antony placed an effort past Jordan Pickford.

The United winner came just before the break as Cristiano Ronaldo lashed the ball home from the left hand side of the penalty area. Marcus Rashford was denied a third towards the end due to a controversial VAR call that adjudged he'd handled the ball in the build-up to rounding Pickford.

However, this did not stop United from taking home a much needed three points. Here are some of the moments you may have missed from the victory on Merseyside.

United end unwanted record

Everton has not been a happy hunting ground for the Reds in recent years having not won there in front of a crowd since New Year's Day 2018. United did beat the Toffees 3-1 at Goodison in November 2020 but this was behind closed doors having taken place in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Antony and Ronaldo's strikes ensured that they ended the hoodoo surrounding Everton and moved the club up to fifth in the Premier League table.

Martial pre-empted substitution before the game

Ronaldo was not meant to be on the pitch in the 44th minute to score the eventual winner for United. However, Erik ten Hag had to call on the Portuguese ace earlier than he would have liked due to an injury to Anthony Martial.

What may have been missed by some is that Martial had pre-empted that he may struggle to play the full 90 minutes when he left his warm up early clutching his hip. Ten Hag chose to stick with the Frenchman but before the half hour mark he was forced off the pitch.

Two records fall

Plenty of talk post-match was about Ronaldo scoring his 700th club goal in his career, however the first goalscorer for United on the night managed to accomplish his own milestone on Merseyside. Antony scored in his third successive Premier League game for United when he opened the scoring.

That goal meant that he became the first United player to score in his opening three Premier League matches for the club. His previous two goals came against Arsenal and Manchester City.

McTominay blow

Scott McTominay will miss the visit of Newcastle on Sunday after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season at Goodison Park. The Scottish midfielder had been on the pitch for just two minutes when he was booked for a challenge on an Everton player.

He will now miss out on the visit of Newcastle but he can still face Omonia Nicosia in midweek due to the suspension only being eligible in the Premier League.
