Manchester United employee and footballing pioneer Tony Whelan has been awarded a coveted accolade at an event celebrating black excellence within the Greater Manchester region.
Whelan, 69, progressed through the famed United academy, before making his way as a player with Rochdale and a whole host of American clubs. Since hanging up his boots, he has helped to shape the next generation in coaching and advisory roles. He is currently academy programme advisor at Old Trafford.
He was among several community role models recognised at an event staged at the National Football Museum. Whelan is often awarded by organisations for his outstanding achievements.
