Manchester United could solve midfield problem with temporary Erik ten Hag reunion

Manchester United have been active in the January transfer window signing Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst on loan deals, but some believe that the current squad still needs more reinforcements.

The current Premier League rules state that any club is only allowed two loans total from domestic clubs but there is no limit on loans from abroad. This leaves United with some economical options.

Ryan Gravenberch was one of the standout stars of Erik ten Hag's Ajax team during the 2021/22 campaign. His form and potential earned him a move to Bayern Munich in the summer but his time in Germany has not gone to plan since then.

Gravenberch has only played 177 minutes for Bayern and is yet to start a game in the Bundesliga under Julian Nagelsmann. This is not good for his development and if he is not in their immediate plans then could United convince the German side to loan the midfielder?

Gravenberch played in the double pivot alongside Edson Alvarez at Ajax meaning he could slot into the current system under Ten Hag next to Casemiro.

Christian Eriksen has been filling in this role at United this season, but out of possession, he has struggled. While he has been an effective stop-gap it is clear that long term the club need to sign another midfielder to make Ten Hag's system work - Gravenberch would allow them to deal with the issue in the short term.

Given that United currently are constrained by their financial situation, there are not many options that the club can explore to solve their problems this January, so making the most of the loan market by bringing in Gravenberch might be the best and most realistic option.
