Manchester United could lose young defender to West Ham despite Gary Neville appraisal

West Ham have reportedly expressed an interest in a Manchester United youngster who is not getting a look in with the first team.

Di’Shon Bernard has been enjoying his first season of Championship football at Hull City and has impressed many supporters despite the centre-back being just 21. The youngster had a good first half of the season albeit has played just four league games since the start of February.

Nevertheless, his contributions have helped Hull secure their survival this term. He is due to return to the United set-up at the end of the season but the Mirror reports West Ham are interested in giving him a route to Premier League football.

Bernard has caught the eye of David Moyes, it says, and envisages the defender pushing for a place within the Hammers squad next campaign. Gary Neville wanted to sign him for Salford City after impressing while on loan at the club last season.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Class of 92 documentary, he said: “Di’Shon Bernard has done really well since he’s gone in at centre-back. On the front foot, steps in front, pushes up a little bit, makes us more aggressive.

“I’d like to sign him full-time but I don’t know if United would let him go. He’s the type of player we need.

“Young, hungry, wants to develop a career for himself. Players who can pass like he can, run like he can, got the physicality that he has, the talent, the ability to read the game – he’s a really good player."

Bernard made his senior United debut in November 2019, playing the whole 90 minutes in the club’s 2-1 Europa League group stage loss to Kazakhstan outfit FC Astana.
