Manchester United could get 'really lucky' with Mason Mount amid transfer links

Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United would be 'really lucky' to land Mason Mount this summer amid reports that the midfielder could leave Chelsea.

Mount's future at Stamford Bridge is becoming increasingly uncertain, with the 24-year-old set to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer. Talks over a new deal have been ongoing for some time, although little progress on either side suggests a departure could be on the horizon.

Reports earlier this week suggested Mount was 'leaning towards' joining United with Erik ten Hag preparing a £55million bid in the hope of beating competition from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. Wherever the England international ends up, Redknapp believes he would be a great addition to any squad.

“He’s a top young player,” Redknapp told Sky Sports of Mount. “He’s got tremendous energy. He can score goals and make goals. I’m not surprised [there’s so much interest]. It's not just Manchester United, it’s Arsenal, every top side will want him.

“It will be interesting to see what kind of fee [Chelsea] can get for him because his contract hasn't got long to go. He's in a really strong position right now.

“It feels like it's been so drawn out, this contractual situation. I feel if it was going to be done, it would be done already. And we haven’t seen a lot of him on the pitch so it’s not a situation where he's scoring goals and proving it to the owners.

“Maybe Chelsea are looking at it and thinking ‘lets cash in while we can’. But sometimes it’s ‘out of sight out of mind’ and you forget how good somebody is.

“He's got a tremendous work ethic, every manager that seems to pick him loves him. It might be the case that someone is going to get really lucky with Mason Mount. He’s a tremendous young player… wherever he goes, he’s going to be a great addition to their squad.”
