Manchester United announce U18 and U21 players of the year

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.

Mainoo, 18, was presented with the award during the interval of United's penultimate Premier League fixture with Chelsea.

The Stockport-born England youth international made his United debut against Charlton in the League Cup in January but he has missed the run-in through injury.

Mainoo will become the latest name to be chiselled onto the Murphy plaque, which is on display in the Jimmy Murphy building at United's Carrington training complex.

There are high hopes for Mainoo and he's considered as the shining light of his age group. He was instrumental in the club's success in the FA Youth Cup last year and those who know him best paint a picture of a grounded, likeable young man.

Daniel Gore received the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year for his performances for the Under-21s.

Gore, also 18, was in the same midfield as Mainoo last season when United won their first Youth Cup in 11 years. He is well-regarded by staff and made 26 appearances this season, captaining the team on multiple occasions.

He's also had chances to train with the first team and the youngster is understood to have a perfect attitude in sessions.

United will announce the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year winner at their end-of-season awards do on Monday evening.
